Description

A mad geneticist recently unleashed a crazed beast infused with dinosaur DNA upon the city. Fortunately I was able to subdue the beast before any innocents were injured.  He claimed it was an accident, though I can't imagine how one might accidentally and secretly fabricate a dinosaur in a subteranean laboratory and then accidentally let him escape.

I fired Soul Arrow after Soul Arrow into the beast, but it seemed entirely unaffected. I have noticed this tends to occure when my arrows are fired at lifeforms with lesser intelligence. Perhaps they don't have enough "soul" to be affected? I don't really know. Unfortunately the Light Rings that generate my Bow and Arrows did not come with an instruction manual... or if they did the instructions were lost millenia ago.

The marauding behemoth clipped me with its massive horns and knocked me to the ground. It nearly trampled me and I instinctively used every fiber of my being to push against the awesome weight bearing down on me in a futile attempt to save myself. It took me a moment to realize that I wasn't crushed into a pulp. In fact,  impossibly, I stood my ground and lifted most of the monster's weight off of the ground!

The Light Rings were glowing and humming with a power unlike any that I have seen from them before or since. With a final twist I slammed the creatures thick skull into the pavement and knocked it senseless. I had no time to celebrate my victory though; a sudden wave of exhaustion passed through me and I collapsed to the pavement myself.

I came to in a nearby hospital. Nothing was found to be wrong with me. In fact I received many compliments about my physical condition.

I tried to replicate my feat of strength on a Buick, but I couldn't get the front end of the ground. The Light Rings neither glowed nor hummed. Perhaps it only works if I am in extreme danger? Or perhaps only if I focus the totality of my will. Or perhaps it will never happen again?

Only time will tell..

I like the call Tech Support comment. My guess is the rings did not come with an emergency contact number.

Well... there's no call number inscribed on the ring... just some gibberish about "one ring to rule them all and blah blah blah..."

Good thinking in that first paragraph.

In my few years in the Marines, I found that if the weapon doesn't come with an instruction manuel, darn few will be able to use it and most of those will come close to blowing off their foot or someone else's.

I would have liked to have been an intern at the hospital you checked in to - "If you would please remove your top.  These psionic stethoscopes only work on bare flesh."

It might be because you picked a Buick - try a Honda next time.

Your idea about it only works if you are in great danger - maybe you need adrenalin coursing through you for it to work.

Indeed... The Buick must not have been threatening enough. Perhaps it might work if the Buick was racing towards me at 60 miles an hour?

I doubt I'll be performing that experiment anytime soon.

See - that's where the adrenalin kicks in.

Unless of course adrenalin is not the trigger. I need to experience mortal fear without actually being in mortal danger. Not quite sure how to put that to the test.

Adrenalin can allow ordinary people to perform acts of strength they never could have done without it; it gives one total concentration on the immediate problem.  It doesn't need kinetic danger but merely potential danger for this to kick in; a soldier on night patrol, a cop going up a dark alley in pursuit of a couple of armed felons.  The problem is, its' capriciousness - sometimes it's there and sometimes it ain't.

There is another type of condition that can kick in when faced with extreme peril, (I don't know the technical term), but it's when time slows allowing you to assess the problem and come up with a solution in a fraction of a second.  I've had this happen a couple times in my life as I suppose everyone who has worked in a dangerous occupation.  The same problem with adrenalin though; you can't control when it will kick in.  A heroine who could control these would have a tremendous aid in her fight against evil.

I've had plenty of adrenaline rushes thus far in my short career as The Amazon Arrow, but that doesn't normally trigger the Light Rings to enhance my strength. It must be something more. Situational awareness has long been a part of my training and serves me well in battle... most of the time.
