Question though, if I just wanted to onlyrepaint parts of the face (i.e not removing the original, just enhanching) could I do that? And seal that specific part with a varnish or certain sealer? Thanks!

You could try to put masking tape around the area you want to seal so that the sealant doesn't land anywhere else, if it's a thin coat the sealant probably won't stick out much.

These kits come with their own wigs, but you can buy wigs online (measure the circumfrence of your doll's head in inches and you'll find many in that size) or you can reroot them (there are many rerooting tutorials available online)

Hi there! For regular spraying between layers, about elbow length should do. Afterward, for the shimmer, just a couple cm further (maybe 10) is fine~

this is my first repaint attempt! the before and after shot [link]
I wanted her eyes to look slightly more natural, I should have went against the original shape of the mold. Also, I painted her with binder, added the pastel to it when wet ( which I probably shouldnt have done in hindsight) and used a fixative on her when I was done.
I really love how you paint eyes T.T So expressive, hard to achieve. I couldn't find Mr Sealant, and even with the binder on it was hard to get the pastels to stick, tried mixing the pastels with the binder but it looked shiney and it peeled off o.o after getting the base color on it was slightly easier to get the other colors to stick, provided I mixed water with the powdered watercolor pencils.
I'm going to have to try experimenting more, thank you again for uploading your tutorial, it gave me confidence to try this even though I ended up deviating in some ways.

Thanks for sharing with me :] I really love her eye design and the overall idea of a sweet face! I think it's very tasteful and fits her sculpt well.
I can definitely see that there may have been a struggle with the base binding material you used because it's creating a thick texture on the surface. But, I think if you can get a hold of some sealant that'll be fixed immediately and you'll be able to make your design more solid and cleaned up! C:

This is so cool, I went to Toys R Us the other day and saw that the Laguna blue Doll had little webbed hands. What paint do you use if you wanted to change the base color of the doll? You mentioned that the sealant would burned th plastic on the dolls body.

Hi there! The sealant does not melt the plastic, it's the acetone used to remove the face make-up that can damage the body. The sealant is safe to use for body blushing ^^ Unfortunately I have no experience in changing their skin color- you may have to look elsewhere to find resources for that. My apologies!

woops! edit *the nail varnish should not get on the dolls body. I wanna repaint the Laguna Blue Doll a more fleshy human color cos shes blue now. Do I just use the same technique using the pastels?

Other than the highlight of the eye, did you use paint at all? Or did you use only pencil between the sealant layers?

nope, I still don't use acrylic paint for much more than the highlights ^^ Sometimes I need it for maybe metallic accents, but if something isn't as vibrant as I'd like it I just work on layering with sealant. It makes everything nice and flat, where acrylics can feel thick unless you can do most of the work on one layer (which I'm not very good at)

Have you ever used a fixative as a sealant? I was looking through my supplies and found fixatives for paintings and drawings. Do you think they'll work?

Unfortunately, no :< I have some fixative that I use for my art classes, and they are just too different. I've also read from multiple other repaint artists that fixatives like that just flake too easily or come out very shiny. I can't particularly recommend them

question again (sorry): how much time do you wait betweem each sealant coat with the eyes? I mean in the paint the iris > sealant > paint the pupil< for example
I heard you have to wait an hour after each time you use the sealant, but it sounds like eternity :s

That's a really good question! I've actually only read something like that once, and then somewhere else a BJD face-up artist mentioned she only waits about half an hour. But I only wait 10-15 minutes and everything always turns out perfectly fine. I'm not sure what factors contribute to wait time (like climate) but as long as the sealant isn't wet or being scraped off when you try to do layers, it should be alright :] I don't suggest waiting any LESS than 10 minutes, though, because the sealant does need time to dry completely.

Hi there, unfortunately I can't recommend Nail Polish as a good medium to use for painting. It can stain your doll :<

I have a question,
you take the heads off while painting?
Or do you only do that with CAM dolls?
I have been experiencing msc sealant cracking when reattaching the head

I leave the heads on the normal dolls, but with the CAM dolls I slightly cut a slit or two inside the neck where the vinyl is supposed to 'hold' onto the neck (I'm not removing any vinyl so the head still fits snug). It's hard to describe, but this way the sealant doesn't crack or stretch. It happened to me my first time and I was definitely bummed out!

I used Loew Cornell pencils and it dosnet even show up!

Not all watercolor pencils will work on Vinyl. Like your Loews, most don't show up, even with the sealant sprayed. I use Derwent brand but I can't vouch for any other brands.

Thanks! I mostly use Michaels pastels, Artist Loft brand. I have some other ones that are also really nice, but I threw away their wrappers so I have no idea what they're called anymore ; ^;
