That's what they originally were. They were kidnapped from their home dimension by continuum-hopping slave traffickers who can "distill" and translate their captives into another form and back as convenient. The controllers on their forearms allow them to access their original forms for a limited time out of each 24-hour period. These three managed to escape with the passcodes to theirs locked in, thanks to some inside help. It is easier for the traffickers to translate a larger being into a smaller essence than vice versa, since there's more to work with at the start. The implications would be huge. Imagine discreetly bringing in a vanload or two of people who are actually tanks, or attack helos. You can guess why this could be a bad thing in unscrupulous hands.
