Description A short lip sync animation for University with my own designed interpretation of Hyacinth and Richard Bucket from the BBC show "Keeping Up Appearances". The dialogue snippet is from Episode 8 "A Barbeque at Violet's" from Season 5.

Textures are from Creative Commons resources.

This was animated at 12 frames per second, using over 200 drawings all using pen on paper. This is the finished coloured version taking at least a full day to clean-up, (applying colour and texture to the characters in Photoshop and removing the white background) although several colours were omitted to meet deadlines on time. Enjoy!

They look more like Hyacinth's parents. My attempt to render Clark Kent and the ARE YOU BEING SERVED crew for my own comics was a total failure. I haven't tried it since. I can only render characters if they are either cute -or ugly !

Episodes I gave titles to are :

Richard goes skiing.

Toyland Trouble.

The Bouquets at sea.

Bruce's Cottage.

Strange man next door.

Preparations for a candlelight supper.

Mrs.Fortescue.

Golfing with the Major.(Maybe I had a better title once, but...)

Richard the Electrician.

Can't recall anymore and wish to get on with this message.

I no longer watch the series because the dialogue seemed sillier each time . I much prefer ARE YOU BEING SERVED ? (new series didn't take), or OPEN ALL HOURS (& sequel), or AS TIME GOES BY.

A 30-minute one-off YOUNG HYACINTH I did not watch fully as they always padded it with 1-2 pledge interruptions. Sudden RUDE pledge blablabla. I also could not see how THESE characters evolved into the ones I watched in the regular episodes, from the 15 minutes I did seeΒ  before that RUDE interruption.

I have resolvedΒ  NOT to watch any show on channels 13,21, or 50 in my area if I have reason to believe that they would have pledge blablabla interruptions.

This is beautiful! I love the animation, style and attention to character. You captured their personalities very well. And even more love for Keeping Up Appearances. I grew up with that show. <3

Thank you! Me too, one of the many great British comedies! I love them all <3 Thanks for your comments, I was trying to capture something from their performance and personality that isn't just copying the actors from the show

The call box scene (in total) was one of my favorites in the series - it was really the only time Richard told off Hyacinth and she registered real shock by his reaction (though she vindictively bounces back later).

Masterful control over the spacing.

What I love about this is how freehand it looks... I can't animate a fucking thing without thumbnailing it first, but this looks like the characters are moving straight ahead of their own accord.

And yeah, postproduction's a bitch, innit?

Thank you! This was animated straight ahead, funnily enough! I really should thumbnail more though, as I think I ended up trying to put too much physical action into this and should have held the poses more... And yeah, ran out of time to colour this properly! Wish I had that fancy cel software that can just fill in the colours!!

There's a slight Ken Harris coast to the motions that helps it immensely.

There's always MS paint. But I totally sympathize with you on this.
(One idea I'm working on involves the lineart for the background seperate from the background, placed over the characters and selectively digitally erased. It'll poke through every so place and look really trippy if I do it right!)

This is great! When I heard the audio I was so happy because I love that show.

The animation was fantastic too, it really did fit well with voices.

This is divine. I LOVE this. You have no idea how excited I am to see this. You my friend, are worthy of my first favorite.

This is so legit! And for you to pick the first (only) time Richard asserts himself gives you extra brownie points!

Aww, thank you! I'm a big fan of Keeping Up Appearances, when I saw this clip I knew it had to be the one to animate! I'm flattered to be your first favourite too!

Aww thank you! Took a lot of work to get it right, but her character is so fun to work with!

Hyacinth's hilarious! And your movie captured her character perfectly! Especially love how you made her larger than Richard, that suited how overbearing she can be on the poor guy. I would've written something like "I wish it were longer", but when I read how much work went into just that small clip, I was like "Ok, see now WHY it's not longer" haha But excellent work!

AmberDust In reply to EBraunstein [2011-05-29 11:57:32 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha, thanks so much! Yeah, they were both animated on separate levels of paper, which doubles the amount of work and Hyacinth alone is over 100 frames! It was a Uni exercise too, so doesn't need to be too long. Yeah, I worked into the character designs a bit to turn them into personifications of their characters, rather than caricatures of the actors. Thanks again!
