Long-distance relationships suck...not because of the relationship, but because of the distance. When you need each other most, you're miles and miles away, and you've no one to hold you.
That one primary need of a relationship, that fundamental desire of the human spirit -- contact -- is missing. It's a horrible feeling to need someone and so much, and not even have a hand to hold.
