Description FOR THE LOVE OF FROMAGE, FULL VIEW!

FIRST STAGE (ie NOT DONE YET ) of a Slayers fanart/giftart for as an illustration she requested for Chapter 5 of her concise but very sweet and well written Xellos/Filia fanfiction "The Crackpot Cafe." Start with chapter one, here: [link] if you are interested in reading it. It's really rather adorable, and that's a lot coming from me because I am an EXTREMELY picky reader.

A lowdown on these two, to those unversed in the Slayers anime and manga: Of all the traditional Slayers pairings, this one takes the cake for complexity and instant natural attraction. The sexual tension these two characters share is nearly palpable in every scene that pits them against each other, oscillating love and hate in a very fine line. The obsessiveness with which they think of, banter with, tease, and attack each other throughout the whole series, even to the point of deadlocking the plans and actions of the other characters--is delicious proof of their desire; English translation, at the climax when they are compelled to join their magical sources (black and white), Xellos even exclaims the L word about her ("love," anathaema to a monster), for the only time in the entire series (I know because I went through every episode again lol and indeed could not find a single other instance of him saying that word): "That's the dragon I love!" , referring to his confidence in her chutzpah and abilities--in response to which she rather affectionately smiles. This couple is fascinating.

Xellos Metallium (Mr. Smiley Purple Egyptian-Wig-Hair Dude) is a mazoku (monster/demon), the fifth most powerful in the world of the main characters, and slightly over a thousand years old. He is a character shrouded in enigma and very difficult to peg as either good or evil, due to his ruthlessly impartial, passive, self-serving pragmatism (he does no more and no less, typically, than what is asked of him, and sometimes capriciously veers off course of a given task or objective for "fun"--but always in the end every step he takes, even the seemingly nonsensical, is calculated towards that single goal, and is, in his mind, quite sensible)....and yet he also commits occasional tremendous bouts of altruism and self-sacrifice. A fan favorite, he is also one of the characters that a small sect of Slayers fans hate the most. The reason for their violent resentment is that they don't accept the fact that he is by nature a creature that was born to serve forces of destruction, who obtains sustenance from negative human feelings--he may feel remorse, obligation to others, or affection, but he feels and expresses these things differently from a human being and cannot help being what he is. Compared to most of his race, he is actually quite amiable, gentle, honest, and stable--he will only truly harm someone if he has been ordered to do so to achieve a specific end for his superiors. He never really lies--he actually pretends to be a harmless, goofy fool, and plays on the mistaken assumptions that people make before he has to do anything more than smile, nod, and wink. He uses clever inaction to his advantage and orchestrates conflicts between other people like a puppet master.

Then you have Filia Ul Copt, a ryuzoku (dragon) in human form, and a priestess of "godly/white magic." This gal is in some ways Xellos's soul mate and in others his complete opposite. Filia, too, rides on the misconceptions and miscommunications of others and often uses ulterior motives to mobilize others to obtain what she wants ("a pretext is a pretext" as Xellos says). Nevertheless, she is almost excessively straight-laced and uncompromising, the anti-Machiavelli, a truly compassionate and self-sacrificing person who nevertheless at times contradicts herself with her unwillingness to be kind towards or mix with people whose standards are not at the level of her own. She is also young and inexperienced and yet very competitive, brave, and determined. I actually admire and like her a great deal, even though she sometimes gets the hell on my nerves. Amusingly, she and Xellos are excellent for each other in that they seem to balance out each other's worst qualities when they are in a congenial mood toward each other. She softens him and he loosens her up--but only when they aren't already near fisticuffs, lol.

So I am all for their pairing, and I will have to add the damn background soon, it will be an autumn country scene--this is sideways by the way because I could only fit it across a bigass sheet of paper that way, in the actual pic they will be upright...anyway I have tried to make the damn scene about three times and backgrounds are my satanic enemy who must be thwarted XO

Still need to finish coloring Fil's face too. LOl Fil, I like that nickname....

Shutting up now.

Love the coloring! It's so tangible and full of texture. Plus the two of them is just damn adorable. ^^

Familiar with that anime? They truly are adorable if you are not, even though despite millions of allusions to their coupling, they never actually kiss or anything XD

Anyway many thanks, I am actually troubled still by the coloring. It seems too acid, I dunno...will play around with the bg! THANKS so much again!

I'm sort of familiar with it.. although is this the same Slayers with Lina Inverse? What's weird is I think my grandma watches this show because she mentioned an anime to me that she watched and the word chutzpah really stuck out as something she'd mentioned. It's always fun to dream big with characters, no? Even if it strays just slightly out of the continuity. I know I'm guilty of that myself.

I actually like the tangible quality to the coloring, especially with the green cloak. I find coloring with physical materials to be a little more difficult than digital.. but maybe it's just because I'm used to photoshop... but with that.. mistakes can be CORRECTED!

LOL your grandma, that kicks ass XD yes, tis the Lina INverse show. Actually it isn't much of a stretch of canon with Xel and Fil being paired. The creators etc have labeled the two as an "official/canon/traditional" pairing from the series, like Lina/Gourry and Amelia/Zelgadiss. Anyway great show.

I actually despise Photoshop coloring and must be less suspicious of it lols. Thanks very very much!

Eh no he was just supposed to be a little redcheeked, nothing like he was actually embarrassed she's the one who is supposed to be blushing. Anyway ty, glad you like X^)

I just love those too... I think I saw Try about 3 times lol. Xellos is absolutely brilliant. Sometimes I wish I could be a bit like him... Ah, nevermind.

Does your friend have by anychance this fanfic posted on fanfiction net as well? Cause I think I read it some months ago

Yes, she does!! She has had the chapters up for a few months now.

I know how you feel! There are things about Xellos that make me cringe, but other things that are quite admirable. His ability to simply shrug off people who are abrasive or unkind, his simple placid self-confidence, are truly enviable. So is his self-restraint, lol. I own Try now and yes, he and Filia are the main reason why I love it.

Thanks so much!

Than that's where I read it.

And that's exactly what i admire what about Xel and why I said I wish I were more like him. That and the fact that he's absolutely brilliant in my opinion. Lina and Zel are smart too, but not quite to Xellos' standard.

And you're welcome ^_^

I read that as 'FOR THE LOVE OF FROTTAGE'. Which also makes sense, in a slightly disturbing manner. But my illiteracy aside, this is fantastic! The colours are just so... and now I'm having trouble finding an adjective. It's pretty, and sweet. There we go.
