Description
The Arlesdale Railway had recently launched an expansion project in order to lay new rails on the rest of the abandoned Mid Sodor Railway, the idea was that there would be a museum in witch people who play to visit to learn about now the Mid Sodor Railway functioned, and that the rails that led to the site connect to the Skarloey Railway. since the site is going to be accessible to the Arlesdale and Skarloey railways, the tracks have to be built Dual gauge to allow miniature and narrow gauge engines to run on the same line.Mike had been sent over to one of the newly laid sections of track, he was told to bring a the breakdown crane with him. and on the way to the new line, he kept wandering what he needed the crane for.
"Do we need to haul any fallen trees? debris? repair a bridge? What else could this stupid crane be used for?!?!"
Once mike made his way to the new section of the line, he went silent. the remaining overgrowth seemed to neatly cover the remnants of an old dilapidated engine shed. weeds and thick bushes boked through every crack and opening. he then stopped beside it, looking at what laid in the overgrowth beside him.
next to the remains of the old shed, was an old and worn out steam engine. the slight cover of moss and rust clung to its frames. The engine looked at Mike with slight shock, almost as if he had never seen another engine in a long time.
"Who- who are you?"
"I'm Mike, I work on the Arlesdale railway. I assume you're a Mid Sodor engine?"
"Yes. Well, I used to be"
"what do you mean by that?"
"I'll explain..."
And the engine told his story as the workmen started working.
"when I arrived on Sodor, I was young, strong, and willing to work as much as I could. I was taken to the Mid Sodor where I met Duke, he was the only engine at the time before I showed up. We both had our introductions and told some stories. once we were working, we managed to get a whole lot done together, but it didn't last for long.
One of my jobs was to take slate wagons over to the end of the line so they could be delivered elsewhere. these journeys weren't bad, but on one of those trips, I had an accident. Without knowing, I lurched forward and derailed myself. I wasn't hurt, but It became an inconvenience since I couldn't re-rail myself.
Duke came to my rescue, and would always help me, but things changed once again. My derailing became worse, and I even had breaking problems, I meant no harm in it, but I was always cross when I had messed up. It even got to the point where me and Duke would argue about my mess-ups.
'you need to try going slower, it would make a difference if you did'
'But I'm always late when I do that! so I can't be slow all the time.'
I didn't want to argue with him, but whenever I messed up, he always arrived and said the same thing.
'I told you to be careful!'
I got so bothered by it that I tried to reason to him about it, but he never listened.
'listen Dukie, Who worries about a few spills!?'
'We do Here!'
After all of my constant accidents and complaining, the manager had made a decision. He turned me into a Generator, and put me at the back of the shed, he said I'd be 'useful at last'. but I didn't feel useful, I felt betrayed, hated, and that all turned into sadness.
as time went by, new engines would come and go as they did, even Duke would sometimes tell stories about me, painting me as a 'showoff' or 'reckless' in order to keep the other engines in line. I had a feeling he knew I could hear all of this. but I don't know If he cared.
eventually, everything became even worse. I overheard that the Railway was gonna be shut down, and that people would arrive and buy engines if they were interested. some were bought, some went, witch left me and Duke on our own.
That was the last time I ever heard from him, or anyone for that matter. I was left in the elements, rusting away, while the world changed around me."
Mike was speechless.
"I genuinely thought I was gonna be left there forever. but I guess I should have known I'd be found someday."
the engine was then carefully layed onto the flatbed and Mike slowly made his way back to Arlesburgh.
when they arived, Douglas was waiting with the Breakdown Train.
nether Mike Douglas or the old engine spoke a word as Mike watched the old engine being lifted onto the standard gauge flatbed.
before Douglas was told to leave, the old engine broke the silence.
"goodbye Mike. Thank you for helping me."
Douglas soon gave a toot, and puffed away. and Mike, silent as ever, sat and wondered.
