Your identification with 7th century equipment is right,but this time I'm using it for litlle earlier period in the 6th.I believe such helmet coverings,like those from David plates,were probably already in use by the romans even earlier and findings like silver dish depicting Achilles and Briscis in Hermitage museum and so-called cathedra of Maximian seems to confirm it from around 550 at least.

I have somwhere on my old copiuter high resolution photo of it,with all details nicely visible,but now when Ive tried to find it on the internet again I found only very low quality pictures of it.

Looking forward to seeing the complete picture.
The Persian fashion of wearing caps on top of helmets is quite interesting; I assume it had to do with the baking sun heating up the helmets and looking cool... in both ways.
