A sad day in history indeed. The Queen of Cities gutted, looted, burned, civilians slaughtered, raped and mutilated. Priceless treasures and artefacts taken, sold like mere loaves of bread, or destroyed. The Roman Empire damaged beyond any hope of recovery. This was truly the end. All that remained afterward was an echo.

So this is the emperor Justinian then; his corpse looted by the Crusaders?
I have to say, I already felt bad about what the Crusaders did to Constantinople, but I didn't actually know about this. As a lover of history, it kind of pisses me off when I find out about things like this happening; careless (or downright malicious) pillaging destroying precious physical links with the past. I suppose that just about everyone has done at some point. But it's still sad.
Anyway, I hadn't seen this work of yours before. I hope you still get round to complete the final product.

Yes body of Justinian and also of many other famous Emperors who were back in their own days the mightiest rulers in Europe. It was recorded that in case of Justinian his body was miraculously well preserved and that he looked like if died only recently and not already in so distant 6th century. We have also good picture of how his funeral robes looked like because 6th century writter described it in detail.

Just to clarify then, did they destroy his body as well as loot it, or did they at least let it survive? I'm sure I could look this up myself, but though I might as well take the chance to ask.

It would be naive to think Crusaders anyhow cared about being gentle to body remains(especially if they considered those dead as heretical Emperors of heretical Empire). How exactly they behaved to body of Justinian is unknown(at least from records known to me)but it is known they robbed his tomb of everything they considered any valuable.Skull of Emperor Heraclios was adorned with golden crown-they took it reportedly some of his hair still hanging from it.Corpse of Basil II was simply dumped into the street.

Thanks for the info. I guess it is too much to expect a pillaging army to be careful with the bodies they are looting (especially given the religious issues you mentioned).
One final thing though, my Church history is embarrassingly lacking, but what were Justinian's exact relations with the Church in the West? I know the final Schism didn't occur till much later, but were there issues of his reign that coloured the crusaders' attitudes towards him, or just a more general association of the Eastern Empire with the Orthodox Church (however anachronistic the association)?

Yet still to this day they called the greatest crime ever committed by the crusaders, even the catholic church regretted this, and the orthodox church will never forget.

I always found it eerie how reportedly well preserved his body was, so many years later. This is a scene I never thought I'd see illustrated...very sad for me but something I don't forget. Excellent work!

Yeah almost a thousand years after his death. Moreover he had plague during course of his life so I would not expect his body in such a good condition as reported. And thanks-I hope the final piece would be nice as well.

I want to let you know that the Greeks byzantine also kill and plunder latin Catholics from the west in Constantinople in 1182 and the fourth crusade attack was a act of vengeance and read this article about it before you said that we catholic destroy byzantine for the joy of iten.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massac…

Wikipedia is equivalent to the writings on the walls of a public bathroom stall.
That being said, I' well aware that the Eastern Roman Empire had their fingers in a few pies.

They wrecked the Hippodrome, too.

And rest of the city and many what was not destroyed or damaged during the sack of the city was later transported elsewhere or sold.Crusaders made the Great palace of Constantinople their residence
but had no experience with the maintenance of such a large area nor have money for it so they for example sold most of the palace roof.

Sacrilege!
I must say, I do look forward to your future works; I myself had dabbled in the idea of writing stories told from three perspectives of the Fourth Crusade. But I must read widely and write a lot before I make any attempt at it.

Ah! 1204, when the two thousand times dammed crusades pillaged the Holy Apostles, and after opening Justinian grave discovered his corspe was unharmed by time and corruption. However that did not stop them to loot his corpse.
You depicted well the scene, even in sketch, and the greediness of the crusades is well done. Eager to see the final piece (remember that his grave was surely done in prophir, thus purpurean marble, not white, just a tip).
Wonderful!! Added to favs!

Indeed.About his grave-I know,it is purple even in this sketch although not so well visible as it is lightened by flames. Also many imperial sarcophagi preserved to us (without bodies and other valuables of course mainly due to 1204 sacrilege)including sarcophagus that originaly belonged to Emperor Julianus.
