Description Dragon Age: Inquisition

[Who on earth thought it was a good idea to put the power of screenshot tools in my hands? I'm never going to finish this game. I've been level 12 for days.]

Right? I'm finally level 15, but I've barely done anything much.

Yeah...I took SO many screenshots of my first Inquisitor, and it doesn't look like my second will be spared that fate. They're just SO pretty!!!!

that's a brilliant shot, how did you get there?

Thank you

How did I get the shot? I use BF Cinematic Tools for DA:I - it's an exe that hooks into the frostbite engine and gives you control of various graphic tools available through frostbite, including flycam, meaning I can pause the game and move the camera wherever I want.

I'm not going to be helping here, BUT if you aren't already aware...

If you snag SWRE (Simple Runtime Window Editor), you can position the camera where you want using DAI Cinematic and then use SWRE to change the resolution to 3840x2160 long enough to get the shot you want.  So you can get not only the perfect composition, but at a ridiculous resolution.

*merp* it works just as you said. I cannot thank you enough, honestly.

The biggest problem is bloom doesn't scale, so the bigger you go the more you lose. It'll be a trade-off between whether greater resolution or adequate bloom makes each scene look best, and I'll work it out from there.

Yeah, the bloom quirk is irritating.  Unfortunately, if you use the console Render.ResolutionScale command to do in-engine hotsampling, you have the same problem, so the issue is definitely inherent to how Frostbite calculates bloom. PLUS you get some weeeeeeird aliasing issues using the in-engine hotsampling as well, making SRWE the better option if you really need to go super high resolution.

Beyond that, I'm glad the tool works well for you!

I'm completely new to resolution switching, downsampling, hotsampling, etc. I've always approached screenshots in terms of 1) enjoying taking them, and 2) being more interested in the overall feeling captured than being able to display what I can achieve technically. That said, when I look at other people's downsampled shots there is often a lovely smooth clarity to them. I don't expect I'd care too much for many of the shots I take, but for some it would be nice indeed to be able to push for some of that clarity.

In the test shots I made last night even just going to 3840x2160 managed to clear up a lot of the aliasing and rendering problems I had (I only use SMAA through SFX - my system can't handle MSAA and the game's pp-aa (presumably FXAA) is ass).

I wonder, does overcompensating for bloom via DAI Cinematic Tools help with the bloom problem? I doubt you'd get something as good as at 1080p, but it might be a decent trade-off?

Unfortunately, no; I've yet to find a good setting in DAI Cinematic that really compensates for the change in bloom.  And if you really want to add to the frustration, try using Render.ResolutionScale 2.0 in the console, and check out what it does to the spell effects!  They actual spell effect sprites look so much nicer at that mode, but due to the bloom issue you lose a lot of the lighting detail!

As for the rest, I totally understand the feeling of being new to it; I'm also a newcomer to the process.  I'm a photographer in my spare time, but DAI inspired me to look more into hotsampling/downsampling, renderer modification and so on.  And while some parts of it are frustrating, the resulting shots I can get sometimes are worth it.

This is actually relevant to my interests... thank you!

I've seen people using SWRE but I've never used it myself, and I didn't really know what it did other than allowing greater resolutions. Since I don't have the most powerful system, I didn't think I'd be able to use it, but if I'm understanding you correctly I can essentially change resolution on the fly when I'm ready to hit printscreen, and then change it back when I'm done and carry on playing in 1080p?

I'm going to have to look into that.

I get the odd crash now and again (well, it's perhaps crashed 5-6 times in 200 hours of playing - not bad I guess). DAI is definitely the most taxing game I own to date, even more so than a fully modded Skyrim. That's why I was wary to push it too far, but if everything's static and paused for the shot, I *might* just be able to get away with it.

Oh, I've blown up the game—and occasionally locked up Windows—when I'm doing SRWE at the absolute fringes of what my system can handle.  I've locked it up before to the point that the framerate drops to like 5 frames per minute (though not often).  It's definitely something to be careful of, but still.

You're my hero.

Thank you (again!) for telling me about this. I got it working, and I got some more tips from one of screenarchery's main god-types, and I've got it up and running with a bunch of profiles for different aspect ratios and it's like my whole world has opened up
