"Death Encroaches"Saichania chulsanensis. An acrylic painting I recently did of a family of Saichania who are about to be engulfed in an approaching sandstorm.
This was based on an idea Utah state paleontologist, Dr. James Kirkland, suggested when I interned under him a few years ago. Though I chose to depict Saichania here, the genus of ankylosaurid that died in this manner with its brood was Pinacosaurus. Seems there were smothered and buried by a sandstorm.
I had to spend a fair amount of time to figure out how to depict the sandstorm itself, settling on a reference photo of a sandstorm that looked like a huge wave.
With this out of the way, I can resume working on my sleeping Spinosaurus in a swamp painting.
Completed on the 19th of March 2018.
Done using acrylics and color pencils.
