Description
"Sickly"
Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis, Acheroraptor temertyorum. An acrylic painting of a sick Pachycephalosaurus being unaware of an Acheroraptor feasting on it as it tries to go about its day. Having survived the initial attack of a young Tyrannosaurus, the bite on its neck has gone septic and will eventually lead to its untimely death.
This painting was inspired by a video documenting a golden eagle eating a pronghorn antelope alive as it ambles around. The antelope looked completely oblivious to the eagle tearing chunks out of it, leading some to speculate that the pronghorn was ill.
Special shout-out to Darren Naish to sharing the video on the Tetrapod Zoology Facebook page.
Completed on the 13th of March 2019.
Done using acrylics, color pencils, and Photoshop CC.

“Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg... And my arm... even my fingers... The body I've lost... the comrades I've lost... won't stop hurting... It's like they're all still there.”~ Pachycephalosaurus, probably

This is quite an interesting scenario. Gory but still quite fascinating.

Wait, so how does illness mean the animal can't feel another animal eating it alive? :/

When I was sick with the flu I was literally out for three days sleeping. If anyone was eating me I would of had no clue.
Animals who are sick just don’t have the strength to worry about pain and suffering, just finding food and water or resting.

Some illnesses can make victims oblivious to the world around them, including clouding it’s sensitivity to pain. It may be too weak to defend itself, or maybe the infection has reached to such a severity that the animal does not recognize pain as it did when it was healthy.
