“Impasse Forgone”

Tyrannosaurus rex, Alamosaurus sanjuanensis, generic enantiornithean birds. A large, male Tyrannosaurus decides it has enough of a bull Alamosaurus encroaching on its territory and decides to fend off the trespasser.

To help give a sense of scale between the two main characters, I added some enantiornithean birds around the Alamosaurus and one next to the Tyrannosaurus. David Krentz helped me quite a bit in developing this painting, namely with addition of the waning river and bodies of water, and the tree in the right end of the foreground. This was quite fitting since the inspiration and main reference for the Tyrannosaur’s pose is based on a photo of my assembly of his Regina Mundi kit. For some tiny details, I added a Borealosuchus skull in the composition.

This is the third iteration of my “Impasse” idea I have been doing for the past few years. It might very well be the last since I have finally depicted a version I am satisfied with. This is so far the largest acrylic painting I have done outside of art school, being 30” x 40”. I have another illustration planned at this scale but it will lack a background.

Completed in mid-January 2021.
