“Nice Night For a Walk”

Quetzalcoatlus northropi, Denversaurus schlessmani. An acrylic painting of a young Denversaurus wandering around in the dark woods on its own, unaware of the Slenderdactyl closing in on him.

One of three Halloween pieces I’m working on for October, the other two will involve other Maastrichtian denizens of the hallowed season. I originally started the pencil work of this one earlier this year, slowly figuring out how to depict the anatomy of the wing finger in relation to being folded for walking. Prehistoric Planet’s depiction of Azhdarcid pterosaurs proved to be indispensable as functional reference, given how they had both Mark Witton and Jon Conway work on the show in building and rigging their pterosaur models. It was the next best thing to having an anatomically accurate physical model in hand as reference.

I did get Mark Witton’s feedback on some of the foot anatomy on my reconstruction, namely on how much the toes could splay transversely (they were much more splayed early on, almost like a human hand). Turns out the range extension of the toes was not that great.

I did codify the degree of damage Slenderdactyl’s right wing has, with about two-thirds of his fourth digit missing. I do have a few more projects in the work in regards to Slenderdactyl.
