Description "Remembering the Departed"

Loxodonta africana. My first elephant drawing and my fifth airbrush painting. Inspired by the fact elephants are one of only three kinds of animals that are known to have any recognizable ritual around death. They show a keen interest in the bones of their own kind (even unrelated elephants that have died long ago). They are often seen gently investigating the bones with their trunks and feet and remaining very quiet. Sometimes elephants that are completely unrelated to the deceased will still visit their graves.

The only other animals that have death rituals are us (homo sapien) and Neanderthals (homo neanderthalensis).

Please excuse me on the inaccuracies on my depiction of the elephant skull didn't have enough reliable references for it.

Completed on the 4th of June 2011.

Done using airbrush acrylics, regular acrylics and color pencils.
