Description
"Remembering the Departed" (B/W)Loxodonta africana. My first elephant drawing and my next airbrush painting. Inspired by the fact elephants are one of only three kinds of animals that are known to have any recognizable ritual around death. They show a keen interest in the bones of their own kind (even unrelated elephants that have died long ago). They are often seen gently investigating the bones with their trunks and feet and remaining very quiet. Sometimes elephants that are completely unrelated to the deceased will still visit their graves.
The only other animals that have death rituals are us (homo sapien) and Neanderthals (homo neanderthalensis).
Pencil work completed on the 25th of May 2011.
The colored version can be seen here

Troy: Yeah now let's see if those wolfaboos still think that wolves are the only carring social animals after seeing this.

Actually they have shown documentaries of buffalo doing similar things. Though i am not sure if it is as thurough as what elephants show.
Wonderful shading, and i like the angle of the view.
