Story:
She'd steered him away from the path and let him pick his way up the mountainside where the snow was deeper and the smells more familiar. The sky was dark, but no stars were out at this time. He knew it would be a few more hours before the millions of tiny white lights littered the sky. After a while, the stallion perked his ears and snorted. Rose gripped the reins and halted Stalker, looking around nervously.
Stalker felt his rider shift her weight and lower herself into the snow. Confused, he turned his neck and caught sight of her out of the corner of his eye. She was working at the straps holding the heavy saddle on. Suddenly, the weight disappeared and he spun around in fear with the reins still gripped tightly in the young woman's small fist. She did nothing else for a few moments except to look at him sadly. He didn't understand what she was doing and pawed the snow impatiently.
Her hand reached for his face and he jerked it away at first, but she was persistent. Stalker felt her fingers move quickly against his thick hair and after a moment the bridle fell away.
The stallion remained still for all of two seconds before he screamed angrily and tore away from her, throwing snow everywhere in his wake. Rose sniffled and watched him disappear quickly into the night. Bending down, she gathered the tack and threw it over her shoulder as she prepared to make her way back down the mountain to camp. Hopefully, it would be late enough that no one would notice she didn't have a horse. Harry was likely waiting to be transported tomorrow morning by train to their final destination.

She forced herself not to look back.
