Description

In this map, we showcase the countries of the world, sorted by the number of time zones spread across each of them (if we don't include daylight savings time, that is).

Some of you might point out that Australia only has 3 time zones - Western (UTC+8:00), Central (UTC+9:30) and Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10:00). However, Australia also has two smaller time zones: Central Western Standard Time (UTC+8:45), used by the southeast and southwest tips of Western Australia and South Australia, respectively (most notably in Eucla, WA); and Lord Howe Island Time (UTC+10:30), for Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. There is also a sixth time zone, UTC+9:00, used by the Indian Pacific train that travels between Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and Port Augusta, South Australia - however, since this time zone isn't used by any particular area of land in the country, I decided not to include it.

Note that this map is correct for the 13th of April 2019 - or, at least it should be; if you notice any mistakes or hear of any changes in number of time zones in any given country, feel free to let me know and I will update the map accordingly.

That's right - all of China uses the time zone UTC+8:00, the same time zone used by Malaysia, Bali and Western Australia. Unfortunately, this means the time is centred on the eastern half of the country, where Beijing and other big cities are located, while the western provinces such as Tibet and Xinjiang are three hours out of sync with their own solar time, and the residents have to get up before sunrise to get to school or work.

Only time will tell if they ever get the problem sorted, but it doesn't look like it'll happen soon.
