Description Hi all,

This is my Original participation in the 'Master Study to Original - November Challenge' of MasterStudiesAndMore , co-hosted by Inspiring-Creation  and ThatArtGrind

I'm also submitting it to the January 2020 - Theme challenge of the love-new-artists .

You can see the WIP and color/values studies that I did in the process here: www.deviantart.com/ana2mars/ar… .

And this was after doing the anatomy study of a work of Manuel Eraso: www.deviantart.com/ana2mars/ar… .

It was very nice to go through the entire process. I specially liked experimenting with the skin colors, and look forward to doing a few more color studies on different topics to gain a better understanding of color under different light and shade conditions.

Something I want to learn more about is how to create emphasis on a certain area. I tried to place emphasis on the faces, specially on the female dancer's. My initial idea was to link the two with a strong gaze, but I think that part was not very successful.

Something else I also want to learn more about is how to guide the viewer's eyes through the piece. The arms and legs of the dancers create natural movement lines which I like, but the flow could be improved - I'm not sure how. For example, the hands at the front feel a bit like a "dead end", totally unintended.

I still would like to do some more work on this piece but the paint layers are very fragile and I already had to do several repairs (including a traumatic one on the back of the female dancer... although I think she recovered well from her injury ; ), so I think I will leave it as is. In case you are wondering, the lighter "stains" near the top right corner were also accidental.

Edit (2020-01-04): made some minor changes... the hand of the male dancer, shadow on the ground, etc.

Hi Ana,

Actually the line of eye vision travel through your composition I think works  well in this painting

(Consider a counterclockwise direction.)

The female's diagonal position I feel is a very good lead into the painting from the leg and  leads the viewer's eye counter clockwise up her figure and arm to the the male dancer's  hand.

The male dancer'shand clasping hers and arm bent in the  diagonal direction to the left leads the viewers eye to to the male dancer's head.

The male dancer's head bent toward the female dancer's head and him looking directly at her face brings the line of vision down to the female dancer head.

The position of the female head in conjuction with the straight vertical  posture of the dancer's back leads the viewer's eye down toward to the male dancer's left hand.

Line of travel seems to stop ever so slightly at the male dancers left hand, ( That would be the normal  because of the position of the dancers) but still  keeps the viewer's attention on the dancers as a unit and within your painted surface.

I feel the flow of movement is very good with the folds of her skirt.

Both dancers have the stance and poise that real ballroom dancers have.  I think you have projected this excellently.

The Tango dance itself has slight  moments during the dance when both dancers seem to be almost completely still for a few seconds between steps.

I think if you had the female dancer with her eyes open glazing directly  at the male dancer face would have given you  the more intent gaze you wanted.

I think you have done a wonderful job on this.

your welcome Ana,

I don't draw or paint people but I really feel you have done excellent work on this piece.  It's very hard to critique an artwork in it's wip stages.

The person doing the critique knows the artist is not finished with it and the artist may  possibly have already determined what they need to change or add.

You have captured the emotion of the dance and dancers.  I feel that's the most important thing.

The  anatomy and positions of the figures are beautifully done in my opinion.

I don't think the male dancer's hand actually stops movement lines. It does connect and unify the two figures and keeps the viewer's eye on the dancers. I think that is not an issue in this particular painting as it is in the nature of the dance for his hand to be at her waist, so in this case the eye movement is completed.

The light source seems to be coming from the right side so his face would be shadowed and darker.  Depending on the nationality of the male dancer his skin tones may be darker so it would not be fair on the part of the viewer to tell you whether it is to dark or not.  Skin tones of your female dancer I feel are beautifully done with the highlights and shading

Your very welcome Ana, I feel you have done an outstanding job on the anatomy and posture of your dancers. They really project the grace and the movements involved in the Tango.
