Description I had this finished or in a near finished state for about a week after I saw the EQD contest and just fiddled with it here and there. Well I decided to post it and enter it into the contest.

The artist shows skill in creating a realistic lighting effect. The light creates very nice contrast with the deep indigo sky, this , in turn, creates intrest. Monvement can be seen in the hair and pose which suggest a story behind the picture. A little problem with proporting and prespective on the eyes. I would have liked to have seen a more expresive face, considering the action suggested in the pose. In addtion, I think a picture reference would have improved the starry night effect, because stars tend to cluster together. The line created by the lightning invites the eyes to move around the scene, which show quite a bit of skill in the use of lines. This is all together a very nice peice.

Thanks, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. I had another question as well. How do you suggest a beginner (like me) approach shading/lighting similar to what you have in this?

Well there are multiple ways to do shading. One thing to always do first is to pick the direction of the light.I do shade/light in two main ways. The first is to create a color palette, the colors used will depend on the environment and character. With this approach I use the solid colors and do a rough shading setup and blend the colors with smudge tool. The second approach is to use the color palette but with a low opacity brush. Sometimes you can get away using just low opacity black brush, but that can make the image lose impact.

The key here is that no one way is "the" correct way. There are many, many tutorials on this stuff. The key is practice. If you go back to my early stuff you can see the progress I have made, I already see progress in your art. From your derpy to your Rainbow dash it seems you have made progress in your proportions of the characters.

here are a few tuts I think might help you.

Thank you very much! This really helps me out. I just want to say, you are probably the most impressive pony artist I have seen here on DA. Your Fluttershy piece is simply incredible.

Impressive, how do you achieve the sparks effect?

I paint rough guide lines of where I want the effect and how it will effect the lighting. I then paint the core of the streak which will be a bright and solid color. After that I set the brush to a low opacity(from 7-23) and paint three layers of glow, Inner, Middle, and outer. I tend to use the smudge tool the smooth out the effect, but if you are looking to try it fast you can use a gaussian blur effect.
