Hi there! Lovely tutorial, I'm sure it's going to be very useful to me and other manipulators out there <3
I found it very clear, except for the step you pass from a desaturated brown (looks thoroughly gray) to black, which corresponds to the change between image four to image five. Would you mind giving us a quick rule of thumb? I understand that it varies from picture to picture and color to color, but at least a vague reference would be really nice. xD Curves/levels is what I'm thinking, maybe some burning here and there, but I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Glad it'll be of some help

For that image, I duplicated and layer and used curves to darken the body of the horse. After, I used a layer mask to erase the area where the horse had already been black. I continued to used curves until the body and markings were pretty much matching, at the same time I fine tuned the edges between the body and the markings.
I also had to brush black on a clipping mask to remove some of the sheen (which was way too much for what I was using the horse for). That was most of that I did for that step. I hope that helped explain it better
