Description Okay So this is the blank map for the Terra Project I'm wanting to start.

The basic idea is for people to contribute various pieces of information for this world such as places of interest, geography, history, myths, legends gods, races, monsters, animals, even details such as plants. I'm finding it a little hard to fully explain what I'm trying to do generally.

An example. One person could simply put - The land mass from V(vertical) 1 to 2 and H(Horizontal) 6 to 20 are perilous mountains with covered with deep snow and subject to mysts and winds. I could then also provide a landscape artwork of said mountains in these areas to provide a picture for the area.

Using the same example as above for location another person using this area for insperation could submit a written piece that could add to the area - Beneath the Northern Mountains lie caves long forgotten by men but the elder races speak of them only in whispers. They are over run now but creatures who dwell only in the dark long abandoned by the noble race that once dwelled and made their halls within ect

Further a 3rd person could then go on to maybe draw a dungeon map of sorts, draw or write up a piece on a magic relic that is hidden in these dark ruins, someone else could maybe use the inspiration to draw up the fierce creatures that dwell within or maybe the ancient race that dwelled there before.

Essentially it would be a resource for both motivation and ideas for many people to dip into and add too. For starters just grab a few locations on the map and whip something up.

How about an evil empire called Perhaedia? It's Greek for hell and gates, essentially "hellgates". To make it a particular big threat, have it border one of the edges of the world map and the Free Nations prepare for war with the infernal empire.

Sounds cool, kinda gave up on this project sadly as there wasn't enough input. I like the name and could definitely be put to use if I revisit the project.

That's depressing. I seemed to have great promise. I'm not sure on whether you chose a name for the world yet or not. I read some of them and liked Lyvondis as suggested by OctupusGames. I think the next step would be determining what races populate your world. Many of them could be pretty standard races in most fantasy settings: humans, elves, dwarves, goblins, dragons, and orcs, etc. You could also add some of your own creation like a horrible abomination with tentacles and hundreds of eyes. Obviously, the humans, elves,Β  dwarves, and goblins would likely be major races while things like dragons are powerful, but somewhat rare. Another thing to consider would be what technology level we're going with here. Medieval would be good choice, but so would the Dark Ages, Renaissance, or even ancient times (like ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome). There's a lot of variables to work with here.

I think stuff that spawned with others involved in it where some different cultures and races that cropped up with their own unique flavours base on ancient cultures. To the East of the map there is a set of small islands between northern and southern land masses, where islands that where originally settled by pirates but over the years the became more mercinary/merchant had some middle eastern flavour with a little bit of viking thrown into their attitude.

Makes sense to a point. Different races would have different cultures to be sure. Elves and dwarves are very different in values and customs, not just appearance. As a result, you could have one race resemble Rome and another resemble an African tribe. For instance, in D&D (yes I play D&D, several editions), I tend to model gnolls (hyena-men) on African tribes, minotaurs on archaicΒ Greece, and orcs on generic barbarians like Conan. However if elves behave exactly like Native Americans, or dwarves have a society identical to Nordic regions, you have humans in funny costumes syndrome. Instead, I propose taking one facet of a historical kingdom/empire and apply it to one race as a rule. As an example, a dwarven king could be called a "Thane" as in the Nordic King's Thegn. Sounds the same and is based on a real place in time. Further, the dwarven lords could be called jarls, actual Norse lords. The most important thing to remember about fantasy is create a culture rather than a name. Once you got an idea on what your races are like, you can begin to name things, places, and eventually people.

How about "Ethirium" for the world name?

What about Lyvondis for a world name?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Anararion In reply to OctopusGames [2012-02-12 00:29:05 +0000 UTC]

Lyvondis? Does it have any meaning, if not maybe the race who used the word could have one for it.

Not particularly, just thought the name sounded cool. If you’re looking for a name with meaning, perhaps a better way to go would be to choose something, say, Greek, in origin. But then again we come back to the question of intent for the design, meaning a need to know the intent or theme of the world to derive the name. Something with chaotic notions, like Pandorica? Something newly formed, like Protea or Proteana? A dream, like Halusko or Halcyon? That leads me to an idea I have based on your map, which reminds me of something between the Mediterranean and the Inner Sea region of Golarion. That’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned, lots of land masses, different coasts, and lots of maritime interplay potentially between civilizations.

Anyway, this brought up world building questions, like what level of technology? This, along with thoughts of the ancient Mediterranean, made me think of the Greek Dark Ages.

For my part of the world, I wanted civilization to be rather low. This is because of civilization collapsing, possibly due to a cataclysmic event, but maybe something as simple as a great war or series of conflicts. It really happened to one of the greatest civilizations of our world, and we still don’t even know fully why.

Anyway, the intrepid heroes of this era must explore and rediscover the secrets of the ancients, perhaps even something as basic as writing (thus high magic.) There may be books, but literacy is at best quite rare. Humanity and possibly other races might also be oppressed and/or enslaved and need to rise up and illuminate one another to become great and throw off the shackles of their overlords. This may be in select areas only, but the greater theme should be evident.

So yeah, that’s my two cowries on the whole (Greek-based) nomenclature thing. Again, what I’ve suggested above might only be in a secluded portion of this world.

And since there are only 27 numbers vertically, can I suggest possibly using the alphabet and AA in place of 27? It makes it easier to write out.

Sure thing about the numbers to letters I'm also going to add a scale bar now that the group has been made Phatasia-project is the group name as it essentially translates to Realm of Imagination/Fantasy. Although for the world itself I like a few of your idea's very much such as Pandorica, PRotean and Halusko.

Well once a name is sorted for the World I'll make a group for the project. People can put co-ordinates in their Artists comments section for any pieces of work they wish to attribute to the world and I'll update the map regularly to show what has been added.

Once a name has been settled on I'll establish a group for it to be built on.

This seems an excellent idea
First, I just want to know the scale of the map so I know the size of things that will be suggested, and then my suggestions will be plentyful ^_^

DMing is what I do and love, especially this creation process! ^_^

See that is where I usually fail my grasp of scale is bad at times but I was thinking each square is maybe about 60 - 80 miles (96 - 130km, enough that each square is between say 2-4 days of travel on foot.

From discussions on the pole Phantasia seems to be a favourite the Phantasia Project is what I dubbed the group (waiting for approval) and maybe a really good original name will pop up during the project.
