Description
A Viper tank of the Imperial Marine Corp, done up in a desert camo scheme. More comparable to a light tank by today's standards, but is the heaviest armor of the IMC. The Empire has remained mostly unchallenged as a superpower, with the vast majority of it's operations being counter-insurgency in nature, so it suits the strategic needs of the IMC. It is armed with a high power rail gun capable taking down starships, and can be used in both direct and indirect fire roles (the IMC lacks an artillery corps, due to the lack of symmetric warfare). It is also equipped with a both a coaxially mounted machine gun, and a cupola mounted machine that can be remotely operated, which both see more frequent use than than the rail gun. Some variants replace the cupola gun with a grenade launcher.
For defensive measures, the armor is relatively light compared to most tanks the viewer might be familiar with, though still resistant to small arms fire and explosive weaponry. This decision is standard among tank design in the Empire, since most Imperial tanks will never face other tanks in combat. It also allows for greater mobility, while taking into consideration the fact that the high power rail gun armament of another tank would punch clean through any armor that could be reasonably put on ground vehicle. It is also equipped with three laser-based Active Protection Systems: two mounted on the rear of the turret offering 340* coverage, and one mounted next to the driver's position offering dedicated forward coverage.
As a bit of trivia, this is a recreation of a design I originally made way back in 2015 or so. It was actually my first ever model! I based the design on a mix of real-world tanks, as well as some creative liberties, so I'd be interested to see if you can spot the influences in the comments!
