Correction: I do not have or find ps2 photos (under CreativeCommons) for this angle, mine is a slim, if you own a fat ps2 to shoot it it could greatly help..

I've been interested in them. I am lucky enough to get a N64 some time later about 5 years ago and I have taken a liking of older games as well on older systems. I've even started trying out games on the systems games and making reviews for them on DA. Games for the SNES, the Genesis/Mega Drive, the NES, the Game Boy/Color, and others I have been focusing on. I will admit this also. I do emulate a lot as well when it comes to those games as well. It's because I have a thing for overlooked games and of course, they can be hard to find physically. Overall, I have quite an interest in older games.

Right, I know this is not something easy to convey but well..

I'd like to know how someone feels about what we call retro VG now. Because, you probably don't have the nostalgia I'm full of, I do not say it's good to, bad to or whatever, It just changes my point of view and I'm interested in knowing the thoughts of someone who is not driven by nostalgia at all, regarding those older systems.

Well for me at least, I am very interested in older games. While my nostagia came from games on the Gamecube and GBA, I've found out more later about older games after trying out the GBA port of the original Metroid (NES Classics Series). So while I never actually had the nostalgia for games on older systems like the NES,Genesis, and others, they got me interested.

Also, I find that there are so many unique games that were made back then. A lot more variety than the rehashed ideas that have been used over and over again recently like the FPS boom or the sheer amount of "family-friendly" shovelware on the Wii and some likely coming for the Xbox Kinect. For me, older games are a nice break from them all and it seems also back then there is an emphasis on gameplay as opposed to pretty graphics. Games like Sonic 2006 are perfect examples for great graphics but gameplay that is just poor.

Also, I find that there are many older games that have memorable music. For some reason, compared to the music of many newer games, I prefer the music of those games back then.

I could go on and on on what gets me interested but for me, "retro games" are something I have no true nostalgia for yet but I have a great curiosity for and I currently also enjoy. I hope all this answers you question.

Variety, yes I think I agree with you on this point, I have also the feeling that 80's/ early 90's was a kind of laboratory, trying to create in many directions. Then the heavy industry came in and relied on reason more than passion.
However I'm starting to discover that there is possibly a second power operating in the "shadow" of commercial empires, I think about indies or mobile games networks..

As for the music, I'm glad to read that you enjoy the synthetic/chip/module/8 bits/insert-the-correct-word period of VG for what it is and not for what it reminds you, which is something I probably can't do. Well, in my case, I enjoy this genre of music because of the synthetic, because it is in opposition with real instruments, in opposition with what I hear in today's movies, radios, established bands, commercials etc.
