Description
So, once again the starship design bug has bitten me. I binge-watched the first five Star Trek movies and started thinking about what ship design would look like between the last of the TOS-based films and the coming of the Ambassador class. We all know that the Excelsior class became the new "Queens of Starfleet," but there had to be other transitional designs during that period. While watching The Search for Spock, the uber-trek nerd in me asked, why aren't the Organians preventing hostilities between the Federation and Klingons since they did nothing to prevent Kirk and Kruge from fighting each other? If the Organians were, indeed, not enforcing the peace treaty that they imposed in 'Errand of Mercy,' then Starfleet might start thinking about upgrading their combat capability.I see the Legacy Class as a sort 'in case of War' ship which would have research and exploration facilities comparable to the Constitution class but designed so that those facilities could be easily exchanged for massive upgrades to weapons and defensive systems in time of war. This meant the hull would have to be more robust overall. Out of sheer nerdy hubris, I added what, in the personal Trek universe that's in my head, was the first collimator arch phaser ('phaser strip') systems to be fitted on a startship.
Yes, I expended entirely too much mental energy on this long-winded description. Sue me, I'm not entirely sane.
