Interestingly M Okuda who designed most of the graphics in the Star Trek shows (Not TOS) has also designed badges, Mission Patches etc. For NASA.

That might explain it, then. Many designers for movie props, models and graphics are also industrial designers. ("Gee, that thing looks like the spinner from BLADE RUNNER or like one of the AT-ATs from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.")
