“The gods will show the path forward.” Kohu had spoken the words with a confidence that he did not fully feel. Like Kataku, he had begun to count the cost of forsaking family, village, and clan. It was unthinkable, but then again, so was everything else that had happened. The world was no longer as it was and Kohu could no longer serve the Twins. He could only do what was right and trust that the gods would take care of the rest.

The old shaman looked around the small camp. Two does, two bucks, and himself. All without homes. It could be the start of something if they should decide to work together. Aya! But there were obstacles to overcome! The sight of Kataku had terrified the girl and in the ensuing commotion, Kohu had used his soporific darts to fell the strangers. Once free of their dream-prison, they would not find themselves inclined toward friendship.

Kohu sighed. Walking over to the prone form of the stranger-buck, he bent over to pick up his sword. Best if the weapon were out of reach when he awoke.

As Kohu looked over the travel-worn buck, he caught sight of the stranger’s manacles. Unbidden, a smile came to his face. Truly the gods worked in strange synchronicity. Reaching into his day pouch, Kohu withdrew a small metal object. As shaman of Orokila Way Camp, he was one of few to possess such a thing: the key to the slaves’ chains.

He had lost the strangers’ trust; with the gods’ help, he would win it back.
