Description
My boss at work is retiring after 11 years.Β He hasn't fully accepted the furry way of life, but since he's been a great boss in every other respect, I wanted him to have something to remember me by.Β So I made up this little painting for his new beach house in Delaware...Related content

Nice doe.Β It's one of very few drawings of a doe that doesn't give her antlers.Β (I never have been able to figure out why people do that.)Β At least you can honestly tell you retiring boss that you gave him a little doe for his retirement.Β (Not going to apologize for that one; I thought pretty hard to come up with just the right way of saying it.)

Thanks very much!Β I too have often wondered why antlers appear on 9 out of 10 doe pictures.Β From what I understand, does can sometimes grow antlers, but it's a bit like bearded ladies -- It's not commonly seen.Β

Don't be surprised if your boss gives you a dirty look for the pun.Β LOL.Β BTW, to my knowledge, the only species of deer in which the does grow antlers is the caribou, aka reindeer.Β But, their antlers are smaller than the antlers of the buck caribou.

I do remember hearing something about female caribou having antlers, but I didn't know that they were smaller.Β Even so, caribou feel almost like another animal to me.Β Guess I'm too accustomed to black-tails and white-tails

"Guess I'm too accustomed to black-tails and white-tails."Β That tells me where you're from.Β We only have white-tails where I live.Β But, yes, the caribou does have slightly, but noticeably, smaller antlers than the buck.Β As a matter of fact, one of the animals I created for a story I've posted here was based loosely on the caribou and this odd aspect about the species.

Yes indeed -- I grew up among black-tails and now live among white-tails.

As for having them normally, I don't think so.Β There are numerous recorded instances of normally antlerless does having antlers but those are anomalies.Β Now that American Pronghorn Antelope does do have horns but I'm not sure if the Antelope is a cervine or not.

Hmmm... I want to say that antelopes are a different order of animal, but my knowledge of zoology is sketchy, to say the least!
