THis kind of freaks me out, but its very cool! How did you get so close to it? Just the zoom button?

AndreasKopriva In reply to SamGuentherArt [2012-01-22 08:46:59 +0000 UTC]

Nope I used the MP-E 65mm Macro lens at 5x magnification. The lens was practically touching the wasp. The reason it didn't fly away was probably because it was still dazed from having fallen in the pool earlier.

Lol I'm not going to say poor thing because I don't like wasps. Their sting hurts! But you did an amazing job!

Oh it was very much alive - I kinda rescued it from the pool and put it on a branch It then allowed me a mini-photoshoot

I've just been reading up about this lens, it looks awesome. Is this hand held?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AndreasKopriva In reply to s-kmp [2011-08-22 20:49:23 +0000 UTC]

Hey there This was indeed handheld because at the moment I do not have a micro-rails system. The way I managed the 5x magnification is by actually resting the lens barrel on the adjacent branch the wasp was on and moving a tiny bit forwards and backwards until it was as focused as I could tell (you can't really see anything through the viewfinder at 5x). The aperture was at f10 (or thereabouts) and I used a macroflash ring.

It's probably the hardest lens I've ever used, takes quite a lot to get used to and I wouldn't suggest it people beginning with macro (I started off with a 60mm standard macro lens and used that for a couple of years) unless they're really patient. There are a lot of times where I long for things like auto-focus, especially when dealing with faster moving subjects. But yea, once you get to grips with it, the results you get can't really be matched by anything else out there

Thank you for the feedback If you'd like to learn more about hands-on usage about this lens, let me know. I'd be glad to help

Thanks for the feedback and it confirms what I'd read about using it, hand held, at 5x magnification but it's much more useful to hear it from a 'real user'. For me it makes your shots all the more impressive

I would love to get into real macro photography but like you say this doesn't sound like the idea starter lens, although with your results I'm very tempted. If you were starting out again would you go for the other lens that you mentioned, 60mm macro or with hindsight and new technology is there something else that you would recommend?

AndreasKopriva In reply to Miguel-Santos [2011-08-17 22:39:11 +0000 UTC]

They are miniature, cybernetic aliens and one day they will devour our very souls That's why I love macro photography though; one very rarely looks at the things they usually swat away or otherwise eliminate, to notice how absolutely awesome these creatures are.

Miguel-Santos In reply to AndreasKopriva [2011-08-18 04:49:54 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I'm fascinated by that aspect of photography - being able to hold a moment in picture and contemplate it forever. Macro photos are probably the most interesting. And this wasp photo is a great example. And they do look like something I would consider alien!
