This is hella nice, like the rest of your bloody gallery!
Im very curious and wanting to get into digital art (and art in general for that matter) but i dont really have much of an idea of "brushes" an the programs
used (i can get friends to teach the some of the programs) But are there any tips you have for me an otehrs that may want to do the same? Or any like tutorials that you know of that might be good to help start me off and teach me stuff like that? and about the brushes and making them etc etc?
Thnx

How'd you get to be so good at drawing, how long have you been at it?
What kind of formal art training do you have?
What do you do for a living? And if it's not too personal, ballpark figures? hehe
You're the man, keep up the awesome work!

AndreeWallin In reply to exStatic [2008-09-30 08:24:37 +0000 UTC]
By practicing. That's how you become good! I have no proper art studies or anything like that. I work as a concept artist in England, realtimeuk.com
To be honest, I'm not sure what ballpark figures is haha
Thanks!

This is great, and since you'll be answering questions, I have some general questions about this for you.
What size did you work in? What tools did you use? How did you pick your colors? Is all of that texture painted? If the texture is painted, how much of that is thanks to custom brushes, if any? What's your method for smoothing out brushwork details to give nice gradients without making it look muddy or smudged?
On a general note, one thing I notice in my paintings is either how obvious my brush strokes are, or how obvious it is that I've used smudge (or painter's blending tools), do you have any suggestions that would help me avoid obvious strokes or obvious muddy smudging.
I may have some other questions, but it's been a long day and that's all that's coming to mind.

ops, wasn't done, no real photos was used in this one. The trick for hiding brush strokes... hm just work with higher resolution and spend some extra time on it. I have no good answer for that I'm afraid.

The most common for speedpaints is 2800 wide, while concepts and matte work usually start out in 4096wide.
Tools - airbursh, clone tool, lasso tool and the usual ones.
The colors just comes with the process, adjusting curves, filling layers and playing around with different blending modes and using the eyedropper tool and pick the colors I like.

I know you have alot of science fiction inspiration, I know you've mentioned Ender's game in the past, are there any other novels/short stories/movies/video games you'd like to give props to as inspiration to your works?

AndreeWallin In reply to jackkoho [2008-09-30 08:12:44 +0000 UTC]
Lately my greatest inspiration has been work by other great artists, Levente , John Wallin, Dylan Cole, Craig Mullins etc. I often browse through their sites for inspiration. But good movies for inspiration hm.. I guess any movie with nice CG is an inspiration to me, Transformers, Blade, Wall-E, LoTR... you name it

I love this one personally, very good lighting and awesome texture. I am simply amazed by how you can throw these things out as fast as you do. I just want to say once again very nice job and keep it up. But now I have a few questions if you dont mind answering them.
1) How did you achieve the texture of smoke of the volcano?
2) How did you achieve the texture of the rocks, they look so realistic, how do you do it?
3) When can we excpect a new more recent video tutorial of your painting process, after all you last few paintings have been rocking the digital painting world, and I would love to see how you do it.
Thanks and sorry if I seemed to ask a few to many questions.

AndreeWallin In reply to tHs-Acid [2008-09-30 08:08:38 +0000 UTC]
1. A mixture between playing around using real photos and custom brushes
2. I used photos as a plate for this one, and painted on top of it
3. well, I only have my crappy laptop while working here in UK so I don't know when the next vid tutorial will see the light of day. But I'll try to make one before the end of this year.
Thanks, and no problems!

Ok thanks I will keep my eyes open for your next vid.
I am just curious but does using real photos in a painting help? I have never given this to much though but lately I have been finding out alot of digital painting artists use this technique. Do you throw it on top of the painting and paint over it, or how does that work? Could you please shed some light on this subject for me. Thanks
And once again sorry for all the questions.

Before I read the description, my thought was Dylan Cole. Great job dude, you really captured the mood and dynamism of the chaotic environment. Funny, I was actually watching his demo reel earlier tonight.

bragtern [2008-09-30 00:10:50 +0000 UTC]
I think the foreground has a bit too much detail, making it somewhat distracting, maybe adding some depth of field would make give it more depth and help focus on the lava thats emerging. Also the storm light on the left background could extend itself a bit towards the volcano, cuz it's like another focus point and source of light thats competing with the lava's light.

AndreeWallin In reply to bragtern [2008-09-30 08:00:14 +0000 UTC]
maybe yes. The image was cropped heavily before uploading, another reason why the comp is fucked up

Nice, now then question time.
-This is a matte painting right? When matter painting where do you decide what to do, and where to?
-What kind of brushes are you using?
-Is there any specific settings you use with opacity, flow, etc.?
-If I were to cut off your arm and in fuse it to my body, would I be talented?
π: 0 β©: 1
AndreeWallin In reply to Drewstroyer [2008-09-30 07:58:04 +0000 UTC]
-This is a matte concept yes, not a finished matte.
-I use [link] brushes
-Nope, rarely change the opacity/flow
-Yes, you obviously figured out how I became good at this. I just cut off John Wallins arm,and stole his last name as well!

First of all, please excuse my bad english, hope youΒ΄re able to understand me anyway
Your works are just amazing, had one of your pics as wallpaper for months.
I hope IΒ΄m not too cheeky if IΒ΄ve a really important question I need to ask.
What are the most important things to start with in an environmental scenerey, are there any rules of thumb which are really necessary to know ?
Probably itΒ΄s an ordinary and stupid question for you, but IΒ΄m paintin since some years and still havenΒ΄t got the clue about plausible realistic sceneries or backgrounds.
It would be awesome if you could post some important rules/hints.
Well, sorry for that english xD
cheers

Hi Graunfeldt,
well, the way I learned was just by looking at other artists work and trying to replicate it (in my own way of course, but there's no point in hiding the fact that a lot of my work looks like Leventes)! No studies or tutorials.
Just make sure you understand what makes a good composition and take it from there, have a good sketch before you start with the details and coloring.

ErickCarjes In reply to AndreeWallin [2008-09-30 15:53:10 +0000 UTC]
In your opinion, what makes a good composition?
And I must say that if you are inspired in Levente , John Wallin, Dylan Cole, Craig Mullins etc I'm inspired in you!
Thank for everything you ever taught to me. Thanks!
