Nice pic!
I'd just like some advice on getting great perspective and depth into my drawings. You seem to be able to do it effortlessly !

there are a couple of ways to approach a nice perspective. You can do it with a 3D plate, using cubes or grids to paint on top or you can learn about vanishing points. I've done both, although nowadays I just go with what "feels" right. I rarely use any guidelines or plates, I just start by sketching until it seems to work somewhat naturally.
I would suggest using grids, eventually your eye will learn what is right and what is wrong!

Have you used Painter? I ask because that has a perspective grid thing, but I don't like it very much...
I will get my 3D finger out and makes some grids for myself!
Cheers for the advice!

Lovely painting.
Is this a matte? If so could we possibly see the original plate? If not perhaps you could share some of your techniques; do you, for instance, begin work in greyscale and then colour it?
Actually, boring questions. I'd much rather know how you got into art, where you studied etc? I'd rather know about you as an artist than how you create your wonderful artwork.

AndreeWallin In reply to abigbat [2008-09-29 21:41:35 +0000 UTC]
It's more of a concept, no specific plate used just patches from different photos. When I do concept art I usually start out as in the tutorial I submitted the other day. Then I just add photos for texturing and whatnot on top of that.
I've never studied art, one year of 3D and thats it. I've been painting on my sparetime for the past 7 years but I didn't buy my first wacom until about 2 years ago, and decided to get really serious about it less than a year ago.
I'm scheduled for an interview in the december issue of 2D artist Magazine (www.2dartistmag.com), I guess you'll find out more about me in that one.

Yu should buy a cintiq ...
Well if you work in a studio professionaly ...
That would be alot better for you ...
Yu know that
Anyway its just 2000$ ...yu trow away tru the window..
But yu would never want anything else to work ...
Its like working traditionaly ...
But nothing more traditional like...
[link]
Without "that" yu will never do such complex and more realistic matte paints yu know...
like dylan cole etc...
If yu getting serious with your carrier now at 25 ...
Yu should think on getting the right work material ...
To do real work of arts ...
Not just concept speed paints yu know...
Watever yu do its always 25% or less of "the real thing" ...
Yu reaaly can do isnt ....
So that 2000$ [link] out of the window ...
Would only do you good.

True skill has nothing to do with tools.

SOULSSHINE In reply to algenpfleger [2008-09-30 15:36:16 +0000 UTC]
wEeeeeelll ....
If we think that tools can enançe your skills ...
Having you skills or not...
We turn to believe that knoledge and sciençe is the best and worst enemy of art ...
Now its up to you and your creativity to do the best ....
...
For example the best tool to do anything is "OIL" and traditional painting in oil ...
Been tru all years ...
Yu cant do with simple watercolors what you do with fine prepared canvas and oils ...
[link] ...
If yu dont know how to use ( knoledge ) and if you dont have the tools ( money enouph to buy "oils" ) ...
Yu could never do as wounderfull results as that do you ?....
And we are talking about traditional Artwork here ...
Digital artwork is just an extension of that ....
...
But lets see... Your example
Yu got some cool artworks in composition and color ... your work is alot like wallin here ...
"incomplete" just a sketch ...
Of course i'm comparing your work and his to one *OmeN2501 ...
Would be the same to compare one Bouguereau [link]
to one monet ... [link]
Its like ... haha
The quality of The wanting to be perfectionist enouph to dont do "impressionism" just ...
Your eager for atonishing real results from every your works ...
Can be a tool ...
As the same as everytool and every knoledge as tool you use to aid the result of it ...
Can put you as a bigguer or lesser artist ...
In results in the world of art.
...
True skill - is having the soul enouph to "give all your live" for the next painting....
Put there everything .... take 6 months if like the renascentists in just one painting ...
Compromise your live for your art ....
Be complete crazy forget to eat .. forget everything just do it ... like its your biguest love and its the meaning of you beying here ...
Do things like if you died next ... yu be satified of leave behind your very most ...
Not in quantity but in quality .. of you to the world admire and dazling see...
If yu can be and do things in your live like that ....
Yu will be able to find what is true skill...
...
As nothing to do with tools cause you put your live and every single thing surounding it as a tool to achieve your best in it ....
That same way you use also everything available in knoledge and inovation self enovation and world latest inovations to do it...
When we talking about wacom cintiq we are talking about bringing the traditional artworld more close to digital real and grand and skilled artists free themselfs to do better art.
Any inovation tool that help you free yourself as an artist .. can improve your skill, cause can improve your results and give enouph believing for you to overpass what you thinked you would not be able to achieve ...
Skill is nothing about effort and faith ...
Your enourmous waist of hours to learn to turn better ....
And how much freedom you have to be able to ... do that.
...
Money gives freedom to an artist.
Time gives quality ...
But having the tools or not to do the art can make an artist reach there ...
Or not ...
Dont despise that.

First, I'm really sick of people hating on Impressionism, because everyone seems to be missing the point. The Impressionists achieved the effect they were after, which didn't happen to be ultra-realism, in their works. So quit it.
And second, while a Cintiq might make digital work faster and easier it will never replace a good artist's actual skill. You can do the exact same on a good tablet as on a Cintiq, it will just be harder. Tools do not replace skill.
You can give a chimpanzee the most expensive oils, brushes, and canvas that money can buy, and it will still not reproduce the Mona Lisa.
Likewise, a Cintiq will never change a bad artist into a good one, just by being present.
My two cents anyway.

SOULSSHINE In reply to redpennant [2008-09-30 19:23:54 +0000 UTC]
HELLO there sweetie pie ...
A cintiq can even "teach you" how to be and artist ...
Even if yu are not one at all...
And do arts even better than some caled "digital artists"
I would explain and prove that to you.
But ... yu had to enter and bring a friend that does not know anything about art at all ...
That would want to work with our production online ...
I can give yu sure of that..
Brave of yu to middle with "me" ...
Love to meeted yu ...
And goodbie ...
...
But wait a minut i did not say what i would say to yu about all that and alot more ...
It would start like this ..
Yu can give a chimpase something to paint ....
And it will do impressionist paints ... and with quality for sure...
In matter of fact ... i would love to put some impressionist chimpase paints ...
Near to some of the worst works of art of some drunk people that call themselfs artist outhere ... and not say no one were is the educated chinpase in art....
To just see if people could see the diferençe ....
Like Maibe not hahahah
...
....
EFORT in art is EVERYTHING.
There is no Art Without effort ...
Its the same thing to "SEX WITHOUT LOVE" or "the kind of love you give all your life for that whoman and then you have sex and its the most beatifull thing" ... of your whoole life ...
To me ...
Again to "PEOPLE THAT BUY" art -Β» this is their vision -Β» [link]
... [link]
GO and fight with those guys "philosofy" about art ...
hahahhaha...
Yu will lose.
....
For me As a "real artist" i think i can be My own philosphy is that:: -Β» without impressionism -Β» And Abstract -Β» And the kind of those kind of lacky arts -Β» Without those there is no impression of "world viewer comon multiple feelings" ...
You are can be something that have a meaning just for you ..
Can be something that have several meanings to all others .
Or can be realistic in a way that only have "that" strong meaning... and nothing more.
Well real art mixes both ...
As to start with impressionism .... in 2 hours of work ...then go down from there to 200 or 2000 hours ...
To achieve the real everything ...
But the impressionism is the most important ...
But the "impression" ...
Its just a sketch dudes ...
The rought ... the 2 hours ...
not the 2000 hours real thing ...
That if yu all fuking lacking artists would not be so lazy ...
Yu would ...
Its the not the skill its not the tool ....
Is the hours and the amount of live you put...
...
But i'm also an artist with 20 years of art ...
i have 20 sinçe my 10 my parents already had their own art studio ..
With 20 years of art above me i reaaly know and can tell you that if art is about time you spend doing it and experiençe ...if you have better intuitive tools you will be able to instead of waiste 2000 hours doing a work yu can do it with a right tool ... in 200 hours the same ...
And "that" can make you abetter artist ...
Thats the cintiq situation ....
I dont reaaly think yu 20 years kids ... should be that "outraged" of not having 2000$ to buy one cintiq ...
That yu mistake what is art and skills and be an artist .. just because of it.
But its not with two cents that you do art ....
Yu got to spend all your money on that ...
Yu have to have everything ... yu need ...
Yu have to have your own studio ...
To be a real artist....
If you dont live your live just doing it ...
Yu will never be any real artist at all...
And sometimes many of us "loose" completly all our life in efforts day and night to achieve it ...
Spend weeks just to do one work ... and kno wthat you are not going to whin that much money ...
You are spending alot more than yu will ever whin ...
But yu do it day and night because you want to stay in the business....
And yu hav eto do it perfectly and have the best tools that put you doing the "greatest things" in the very most and better and perfect way ...
Dont compare that with kids that have its tablet and do simple stupid sketches of 2 hours ...
And then tell that that is art ...
Well its not .
Art is when you give your whoole life
And even put it in risk to do it.
But not just some commo vomit thing ... just because you need to relax ... and art is a jerkoff for yu ...
Well not ....
Art has to be done counscious that its a whin or loose ...
And some most of times your live is in stake because of just doing it.
Remenber that ...
--
And to mister Wallin ...
That is to be "really" serious about your art ...
---
But the kid is doing it everything professionaly the very right way ...
The rest is that I'm sure he can reach as good and intense things as any Dylan cole or Dusso ...
he just need to put away a lil its tablet and have a round with cintiq working "use the 2" [link] to improve its productivity .. so its 4 hours in each paint become double productive like it was 8 hours ...
Because having a cintiq is working as double fast and better ...
So i'm helping here the guy "professionaly" about this ...
...
So Its better yu people not mess with me or waist my lil and precious professional producing art time with your relaxedkids vision about art when i'm doing it. plz?
Yu guys would had to have 30 above in years to be able to awswer me anyting enouph visionvalid for me ... ok.
Thanks.

So essentially... we are agreeing?
In that an artist could spend 200 hours doing something with a Cintiq or 400 hours on a tablet -- so, as I said, a Cintiq makes the job faster and easier -- but whether or not that artist will produce anything worthwhile depends first and foremost on his skill level (because a chimp could try reeeeal hard to paint the Mona Lisa, and I doubt it would succeed).
Thank you for clarifying that you were trying to help from a professional standpoint. It sounded more as though you were saying that anyone who was not working with a Cintiq was likely to produce inferior artwork, regardless of how good they are or how much effort they put in. Clearly not the case.
Not trying to waste your time or "mess with you", whatever that means. If my comment was a waste of time, why did you bother replying to it?
