"All actions invite reactions, Rulei," hooted Araucaria. "You could have helped this land, established a paradise for its peoples. But you opted instead to squander your time and talents pursuing frivolous self-glory. For your misdeeds, I think I shall transform you into a human. Stumbling around on a pair of legs for a year or so will hopefully teach you some humility."

"A human?" Rulei gasped in shock as the resplendent serpent tensed and coiled like an overwrought spring. He bowed his head before the great wizard and when he spoke again, his voice, once so full of song and grace, shrunk to a pathetic hiss. "I beg of thee, O wise and kindly mage, do not torture me so. To exist as one of those foolish, blind, deaf, stubborn creatures is a torment worthy of the Inferno itself. If shedding my beauty is to be my penance, then so be it, but I beg of you to reconsider the sentence. Conjure my new form from those far more useful to the world – a dung beetle perhaps?"

Araucaria's lips curled back in an amused smile as he raised a single finger and summoned forth an orb of eldritch white light.

"You might want to find some clothes," he chuckled.

Following the Knight-Errant Chicken (www.deviantart.com/andrewdefel… ) and the Warlock Rabbit (www.deviantart.com/andrewdefel… ), this completes the trilogy of Fantasy Critters. It was definitely a lot of fun creating these characters and I hope to someday be hired to create more!
