Description Sumo Chibi wasn't ALWAYS a famous sumo wrestler! He once started out as a baby (*gasp!*), tended over by his blind mother.

Another ThePortfolio piece. Once of the other things I mention in my resume is that I do environments, so I am trying to get into environments with as much identity as the characters. I'm doing fairly well here, but I'll try to do better next time.

the characters are so genuine as usual and the lightingin this piece looks great... you got all your angles covered... you definitely have a knack for enviornments... i think that is what attracted me to your style in the first place when i saw that piece in the trees you did that had sooooo much detail i was blown away.

It has a really surreal sense to it (part of it is probably the claustrophobic environment, and the scary hands). It's hard to tell what's going on. There are lots of clever things (YES THAT TABLE = HILARITY!, and I love the different-sized ricebowls), and nice craftsmanship here, but it's just...not workin' for me, I'm afraid. "Mom"'s positioning and gesture are hard to decipher (not to mention gender), baby has cute li'l feet but is squashed oddly...
(Also, with Mom: it's hard to tell which hand is near, and which hand is far, for some reason...they read as going either way.)

Anyway, the situation isn't CLEAR--is she feeding the baby, talking to the baby? What kind of reaction do you want out of the viewer? Are we supposed to be creeped out by the baby? Going "awww" at the baby? Laughing at the absurdity of the piece?

...Aaand I wouldn't be saying any of this, except you attended to ~ angelsunbomb 's comments with haste. {:} I love your work, but as a portfolio piece, you might want to consider another.

Anyway, good for you for doing environments (I also like the lighting/shading under the table)--they're SO tricky, and while the piece is odd, I think the environment does have a nice solidity to it.

Good luck!

Thanks, and I think I'll need at least a day away from this piece before I go back and retool about 4 more hours of unexpected delays to get this done.

Here's the thing. Obviously, I don't always get the basic idea behind a piece across, and I understand that's one of the big obstacles artists need to get through, but in the meantime, it's SOOOOO frustrating! The whole concept behind the mother figure is Blindness, so I didn't give her any eyes, which makes sense, and I exaggerated all her other senses to make up for it. Her ears are big and red, her fingers are long, sensitive and wiggle around like antennea, and her nose is just the same. But the fact that she has a big nose makes her look like a man, but if I lessen the size of her nose, it won't be clear that her senses are heightened! She's trying to feel her way around the room, but because it's a still painting of one pose, one pose in that piece of action becomes very vague.

The whole point of illustration is to put the essential concepts to rise to the surface, but if they cloud the overall image, the concept is ruined! Part of what I'm known for is bringing concept to its barest elements, which is exactly what cartoons do all the time, but often, and ironically, exaggerating something that may make sense at the time could hurt it instead. While I do see why people would be confused by this, my reluctance and level of frustration to fix it shows that I may not have what it takes to be a real illustrator, and that I am even farther away from reaching the same level that my Senior peers have already reached even when they were freshman.

If this puts into your mind a screaming internet user, I am far from screaming. Like you said, environments are tricky, but is essential for the types of work I wish to make. If I cannot be well-rounded, my chances of getting into something are tossed out the window.

Five more weeks til graduation... *sigh*...

I hear what you mean, on that reluctance to change things. I still feel it a lot, but I hope I can learn to work through it also (I *just* got into my Illustrationg program).

Now that you've explained the reasoning behind some of her physical choices, they make more sense...maybe just try to feminize them a bit more (add earrings?).

You can do this, man! You've done so many other things successfully, I know you can pull this off. Just give it some time off to fix, maybe take it down for a day, mull it over...
Like I said, you can do this. I BELIEEEEEVE!

I agree wit the girl thats confused... theres something not right about it and thats why many people are saying weird. I couldn't tell that that person in the red was chibi's mother or even that it was a girl. the figure is quite masquline might be because of the nose and ears. Im distracted a lot by the mother's hands that the baby doesn't quite grab me as enormous as it is... The use of colors and techniqe are great. This is probably just a composition problem. As an artist I know how i hate being told this (unless i hate it myself XD)... but this isnt your strongest peice.

Odd, how I didn't encourage advanced critiques for this piece, and I get more of those than when I do!

If you want to read a good description of how i feel at the moment, read my reply for dwilliams. It's something all artists must go through, but I feel that I especially need to be beyond that place at this point in my life, and I consider it almost a punishment that I am not. I will be graduating in 6 weeks, and I am so stressed that everytime I get an idea, I feel the actual artwork that arises from it should be done and in my hands YESTerday! I WILL fix this eventually, but I just can't concentrate right now.

No no no, it's not okay. The phrase "this makes me confused" is an emergancy all-hands-on-deck for an artist, especially if it's for the portfolio. What exactly is confusing you about it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

angelsunbomb In reply to andrewk [2005-04-16 20:29:33 +0000 UTC]

I guess I just don't understand the true concept of the message your trying to send off? Her hands don't make sense to me...

Neither does the child's big but yet flatness to him He looks like a fat pancake.

Ok I feel like I'm really insulting you.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

andrewk In reply to angelsunbomb [2005-04-16 23:08:05 +0000 UTC]

Nah, you'd only be insulting someone if the person being insulted is feeling confident that they're not what you say they are. You are saying the exact same things that other people said here, so these problems that you have with the piece are true. I will fix those eventually.
