With the castle entirely his, Kaa dismissed the three hypnotized fairies, who flew slowly to the highest tower. As they moved farther from him, Kaa felt the enhancement of their magic gently ease from his coils. To his astonishment, all those within the castle remained transfixed by his power, but Kaa realized that even magic would have its limitations.

He ventured to the throne room, removing King Stefan and Queen Leah to their personal chambers, where they were to remain comfortably from his sight and far from the seat of his power. Once coiled in front of the thrones, Kaa addressed his large assembly.

”My followersss, I command you,” he began.

In unison, the entire room chanted, “Kaa!”

Kaa smiled. “As your ruler, there are many thingsss I expect of my sssubjectsss. This cassstle mussst remain gloriousss and strong. That meansss all of you, my faithful, mussst take on a role in itsss upkeep. It is very likely that a terrible conflict is coming sssoon, and we mussst be ready.”

”Kaa!” chanted the crowd as an answer.

Over the next few minutes, Kaa outlined his plans for the next few days, as well as the special treat he had planned for his handsome men upon his return. When he finished, he sent each and every one of his helpless servants from the room to begin their tasks of maintaining the castle and preparing it for the possibility of war.

Alone for the first time in weeks, Kaa found the cold and quiet less relaxing than he’d expected. “Remind me to keep a prince or two with me next time,” he said softly as he closed his eyes for the night.
