Description
Part of an art trade with the lovely FoxtaileGod these two babs are so cute! I love them! I couldn't choose which one I wanted to draw most so I just drew them both, since they are like the bestest of friends.
I really wanted to try something new in my drawings, and since I really love watercolors and had seen some watercolor looking digital drawings I figured I would give it a try, and my god was this fun to draw! I found this tutorial and it has to be the best tutorial I've seen, its so nice and simple, go check it out if you want. fav.me/d7t2aim
I still need to work on some stuff a bit more like the coloring and anatomy but I'm still quite proud of how this turned out.
I hope you like it dear!

Words cannot describe how beautiful this is...
I was literally sitting here trying to figure out if this was digital or if you actually used watercolor
(I read the description so I know now, but wow)
I just realized my 100th deviation is coming up, so I'm gonna use that tutorial for it

Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear that you like it, I had so much fun working on this piece, especially with the coloring . I tried my best to make the watercolor effect look as real as possible, I still think it could be a bit better but It's still pretty neat for my first go at it.
And do it! it's so much fun to do also the tutorial is really nice and easy to follow which helps a bunch.

You're quite welcome! Well, I think you accomplished your goal One of the things that I think really helped is that your lines aren't clean (that's a good thing)... it actually looks like you used a dark pencil or the watercolor effect bled into the lines somehow. How'd ya pull that off?
I plan on it! Gave it a quick skim, and it looks well organized... that's always a major plus

I tried to make it look like a more traditional drawing so I used a brush that has a lead-like texture to make it look like a pencil sketch. I tend to use that brush a lot in my works [ sta.sh/0itpkkmdyjw , sta.sh/0xjypwqrkns ] , I'm not a big fan of doing outlines since I find them tedious to do, so with this brush I do the sketching that sometimes end up as the outlines. I also just find it simple and easy to use, here are the settings if you are interested sta.sh/0qb3rgywigx

You pulled it of and it looks amazing. And those are all beautiful and show off the linework nicely. I know what you mean, I've been doing sketches today and there's no way I'm outlining all (*goes and checks how many I've done so far*) 37 of these damn things.
Thank you kindly for your brush settings, I'll try em out right after I have a snack

Mhm, I do. I think I might try it for "inking" later. Since I normally sketch with a 1pt soft round brush the texture doesn't really show up, so I think once the sketch is down I can bump up the the brush size and maybe kill inking and outlining in one fell swoop

That's usually what I tend to do XD I specially like outlining with it since you have a bit more freedom with the strokes because of the rough texture. So you don't have to do smooth single stroke outlines and instead use multiple strokes to outline it, which gives it a more realistic pencil drawing look as well. (not to mention it's a much faster process)

Very nice, I guess we have more in common than I originally thought I already like the sound of that! My natural drawing style is to use multiple strokes like you're describing! But I used to mistakenly think I was supposed to listen to these 'professionals' that say "only single strokes, long clean sweeping movements from the shoulder, blah blah blah..." And you know I'm all about saving time; I always feel like I have so much to catch up for.... like I'm making up for a lifetime that was never truly mine...

I feel that! There is so much I want to draw, so much I want to create... I understand what they mean with the whole 'single stroke' thing, it's an effective method for nice, smooth, solid outlines and flowing curbs. However not all art styles are the same and in some cases it's more effective to try different techniques for different works, for example, when I create reference sheets for my mlp characters I tend to do the smooth solid outlines so that I can color them similar to how it's done in the show, and if I do any sort of art trade or commission or whatnot the person drawing it has that information at their disposal. But I rarely do these since the outlining process is so tedious and I find myself forcing me to finish the piece and it's frustrating. Art should not be frustrating. Art is a way to express ourselves and should be something that we enjoy doing not a grueling task. So that is why I've turned to these simpler styles of drawing and creating art as a whole because I have fun with what I do and I love the end results, even if the pieces are not perfect or they are not the best I still get enjoyment out of them as well as a learning experience, something that I would get out of my more traditional works.
I guess we do have more things in common than we imagined huh?

Exactly! But I guess we have no choice but to take it one day at a time... You really hit the nail on the head, right there. I usually say 'right tool for the right job' or right technique for the work/style. So many people fall into the trap (myself included) of thinking that there's some magic technique/program/brush to make them good at art (cause heaven forbid it's, you know, actually practicing and developing a useful skill) , when it really just depends on the person and what they're doing. For art, and life in general, just listen to your body and do what feels good for you.
I really should put together some reference material for my mains. I just find it so hard to do since my characters are constantly evolving... I swear I draw them differently every single time. And color palettes can change depending on the environmental lighting. I get that it's important to establish a standard, but I'm just too busy... making all these excuses *derp*
Yeah we do! I'm glad I met you

I think it's just human nature to just find some way to make things 'faster'. People want everything fast, fast internet, fast food service, fast travel, ect. so people try to simplify what they do in an attempt to save time and that can sometimes roll over into art. They believe that if they do this or buy that that they will instantly be good at art and be able to create masterpieces in seconds. It's a bad mentality to have and sadly it's a very common thought we tend to have, and when reality hits some people would deny it and get frustrated with themselves over their works as they compare themselves to more skilled artists instead on focusing on improving themselves. Art is something that takes time, effort, patience, and most importantly passion.
I know what you mean XD sometimes I just want to play around with my characters or maybe alter them slightly and then that reference I made becomes outdated...it's a pain.
I'm glad I met you as well.

True. But I think people lose sight that 'fast' doesn't always translate into better; it's more of an efficiency and balance problem. Sadly, I feel like this has become part of our culture... this culture of instant gratification and 'gimme gimme'. On top of that there seems to be a general lack of responsibility and accountability for one's self "I'm not bad at art, it's the brush's fault"
The piece I'm working on right now isn't really like anything else I've ever done before and my character is barely recognizable; it's passed the realm of feral into straight monstrous and I it!
That's perfect! That's the very best gif you could have used. Thank you for fixing my van

Indeed! We as a society should learn to take responsibility for our actions and learn that making mistakes is just part of being human; learning doesn't just happen instantly it takes some form of development.
Oh~ that sounds really interesting and also sounds quite surreal.
Lol No problem

I'm exited! Inks are down now (with the brush you gave me)

It most certainly has! I accidentally found out that if you put a fringe layer effect on while using your brush, it does this auto outline thing... looks pretty useful for pones

Yep, it's the fringe effect that does it so it actually works with any brush as long as you lay down SOLID color. And the fringe is adjustable so you can change the line thickness on the fly!

Nice! I usually tend to use the fringe for when i'm doing the watercolor effect, it gives the paper texture some more sharpness .

Aww! Thank you so much!! ;w; I'm really glad that you like it!
I've been working on my style and just experimenting in general with my works, I just haven't post much of it. ^^' And I definitely recommend the watercolor technique it's quite fun to do and play around with.
Also no problem, I had so much fun with this art trade.
