Description
These chitinous humanoids developed on the Lyystran, a planet rich in high-z elements. The planet's lifeforms, when examined, have quite high amounts of these heavy metals, in particular tungsten. These elements usually have no function, except for the aforementioned tungsten, which is utilized in the chitin-like plating found in some creatures. It is not yet known why tungsten is used in this way, but it has resulted in an increased rate of immunity to radioactivity to those with the chitinous "skin."

Lyystran, however is now a recovering ecological disaster, having been bombarded with wreckage from battles fought in the system, much of it toxic, caustic, and radioactive. The Lyystranese, sometime about 1400 years before the present (the LEU's present, at least), fled the planet aboard a multi-generational ship, and drifted to an average star with gas giants, which they could use to gather fuel.

They found more than just gaseous planets, however...
