I don't get why Cloud or Snake were ever part of Smash, weren't their games both Playstation exclusives?

Metal Gear had an inferior NES port that was how many people were introduced to the franchise. It also has a non-canon NES sequel that inspired Hideo Kojima to make an actual sequel on the MSX. This was all years before Metal Gear Solid happened.
While MGS1 was a PS1 exclusive, the remake Twin Snakes was developed by Silicon Knights, with input from Konami's Hideo Kojima and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto. It was -- and remains -- Nintendo exclusive. Likewise, MGS3 received a 3DS port fairly early in the handheld's life.

I know I'm late but the reason they were added was because they were basically as iconic/prolific as the other Nintendo characters.

I understand pleasing the fans, but isn't Smash Bros. all about celebrating NINTENDO's history? If they wanted a Square-Enix character that bad, why not Chronno?
