You know, I really do think it's more fun to build whatever you want with Legos. The problem is you can't really do that with today's sets because there's way to many hyper-specialized pieces and not enough basic blocks, so the only way you can really "build your way" is if you spend years generating a massive collection of bricks first.

I think the message is "You don't have to follow instructions if you don't want to", not "INSTRUCTIONS ARE EVIL!!!"

I think I understand the humor here xD ..

After seeing the movie, I mixed up all of my peices when I got home (like putting Jar Jar's head on Robin, and giving eyes to an ice-cream truck). I bought a Castle set and turned it into something totally new and different...Β  although since I am not a big "master" builder, i needed the instructions to understand the structure of it better.

Well, I think that's why they made the Lego Movie sets look so... Slipshod.
Honestly, the sets look like they said "Aw, heck. Let's just throw a bunch of cool pieces together and put 'em in a set."Β "Shouldn't we make them actuallyΒ be able to be built into something, sir?" "I don't know- just attach them all together and throw in some minifigs. That'll make them marketable to the parents!"Β

I think the message was that both individual creativity or following the instructions are ok ways to play. In other words it is your toy, play how you want with it.

I interpreted that it is okay to follow the instructions or do things off the book.

Which is pretty much stated in the film. Emmet even points out that the Master Builders are all really inventive, yet a lot of what they build falls apart for lack of cohesion. Whereas the citizens have built skyscrappers in a day thanks to working together and following instructions. 'Have fun and don't cover everything in glue' is probably the cloesest there was to a message.

Oh, that and the one in the musical number.

'DARKNESS! NO PARENTS! SUPER RICH! KINDA MAKES UP FOR IT!'

My explanation for this little movie-and-reality inconsistency is that the Lego company themselves probably didn't pay attention to the film's message when distributing the sets that tie in with the movie. But hey, the people selling the sets most likely don't give a damn how you build it, just as long as you're happy building and playing with them and they have your money, right? X3

Not sure if we saw the same movie, but the movie didn't completely discourage building by instructions.

I love (nay, adore) the movie, but the sets are...really for those people who just want "toys from [x] movie because it's so totalee kewl."Β  XDΒ  None the less...I kind of like the sets, the ones that have the normal and "creative" version.Β  Might help kids to see that one set can be done so many different ways.Β

As someone who hasn't actually seen the insides of these boxes outside of photographs, what are the "creative" versions?

KaizokuShojo In reply to AndyKluthe [2014-03-02 23:46:14 +0000 UTC]

Some of the Lego Movie sets are versions of the things you see in the movie when all the city's denizens are inspired to create something against the micro-managers--like a robot that was a garbage truck, with instructions for each, and...I forgot the others, but I was amused when I saw them (especially since not everyone would've payed attention to the individual creations, as cute/cool as they were).Β

Some non-Movie sets do have more than one set of instructions of course, for alternate models, but not all...so it's nice to see that.Β  Natch the real sets these days for a "potential Master Builder" would be the Creator sets... Although I was always really fond of the Freestyle buckets.Β

That's actually really cool!

It's nice to see them showing (even if they're both instruction builds) that sets don't have to build just one thing.
