I'll admit my bias here: as a former climber and one-upon-a-time boy scout, I love rope. I'm sure that's what initially captured my interest. As I looked at the photograph more, however, this image really hooked me.
I love that the photo is in black in white. It forces me to focus on the weave of the rope and shape of the coils. I frequently find that black and white photos, especially close-ups and macros, tend to appear a bit flat, but that is certainly not the case here. I think it is remarkable how much depth the photographer has captured in spite of the limited spectrum. It's possible that the black and white also makes the rope look older, and gives it more character. I see the sheen of the rope mantle, so I am reminded of the soft texture of a well used rope.
The vignetting is a bit more harsh than I like, but not overwhelming. More distracting is the slight over-exposure in the center, considering the wide range of values throughout the rest of the photo. I'm also a bit confused by the canvas sort of fabric that appears between the folds, because I can't really tell what it is or why it's in the photo.
On the other hand, I do really like the strands of string bundling all the rope together. They're a wonderful contrast to the rope in so many ways. Their gray-value stands out against the rope, so I can trace the strands and sloppy knots in the twine. Also, they run contrary to the natural flow of the rope, restricting it. They're clearly under tension compared to the loose coils of the thicker rope. The strong, old rope is so clearly in opposition to the spaghetti-like tangles of the lesser string. It's a wonderful image.
As I follow the loops of rope with my eyes, I can't help but wonder what this rope did for a living and where it will end up. This is a really great photo.

I agree. I thought they were snakes! Especially since it is in black and white...

LOL
I don't think I would have been able to hold the camera still if they were!
