Description Okay—this is my first little guitar tutorial ever. But I’ll be teaching the basics to reading tabs, so this shouldn’t be too hard. I’m going to start with an example from “Come As You Are” by Nirvana.

e is the highest string, string 1. The top e that is, the bottom e is the lowest string and you should understand the others.

Now on the lower e line it says “0”. 0 always means open, so just hit the string. There’s two 0’s so you’d follow that. Next you see a “1”. This means string six (e) fret 1. Then you move your finger to the 2nd fret of the sixth string. Then you see a 0 on the 5th string (a) so you play it open. This opening isn’t very challenging but as you proceed into the song you may come across some problems.

The “x” indicates that the string is muted. So in this tab the second string is muted as you play the 6th fret on the third string.

The “/” indicated an ascending slide. While the “\” is used to indicate a descending slide. So 11\6 means to slide up to fret 6. 11/13 means to slide down to fret 13. “s” is also a possible symbol people use for slide.

In this a piece from the Super Mario Theme, “h” is used to indicate hammer on. So it means fret 5, hammer 7 on the 4th string. “^” is also used for hammering.

In a song you might see 11p10. “P” indicates a pull off.

This is a piece from The Bravery’s “An Honest Mistake”. In this song a little “~” symbol is used. This symbol could be replaced with a “v” for vibrato.

Also, there’s something called “Right Hand Tapping”. From the title you can tell it’s just for right handed guitarists. The symbol used for this is “t”.

Harmonicas are indicated with the “< >” symbols.

The last section of the tutorial is dedicated to string bending. A “b” indicated this. So if you see 7b9 that means to bend the 7th fret until it sounds like the 9th. Rarely is a “r” used to indicate a string bend. This means to bend up the string, rather than down like you would with “b”.
