Yet another request from Tumblr.
A calm, cool evening in the Gobi Desert of Inner Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous, some 75 million years ago. As a Pinacosaurus hunkers down for the night, a lone Velociraptor on the prowl stumbles across its path. Curious, the little predator scampers up to examine it, assuming that it’s dead. Should the armored giant wake up, the raptor will be in for a painful surprise...

Like with my earlier piece involving the Tarbosaurus and Charonosaurus, the person who requested this piece asked for the dinosaurs to have colorations similar to those of modern animals. In this case, the Velociraptor is colored after a Fennec Fox and the color scheme of the Pinacosaurus is based on a Gemsbok.

This piece, at least in terms of color, was a challenge. Firstly, getting the skin color of the Velociraptor took at least 3 references to get correctly. Secondly, the coloration of the sand took some time to get right since I was starting to run out of the right markers and pencils. And thirdly, when I first took a picture of the finished piece, the sky in the background had too much of a shine to it, so I tried editing the lighting to get it look more like the scene was set in the evening.

Also, I gave the Velociraptor long tufts of feathers on the sides of it head that resemble ears. Since the anon who requested it wanted it to be colored like a fennec fox, I figured I’d go one step further and add that extra feature.
