A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.... two Latinas engaged in a fierce battle with their chanclas. There could only be one victor.

Today is May 4, also known as Star Wars Day, because of "May the fourth be with you." On this day, fans of Star Wars would be free to gawk about the things they love about the franchise, whether its the gargantuan amount of characters, the epic battles against the Rebels and the Galactic Empire, or being a richly elaborate universe. When it comes to me, I'm not exactly a big fan of the franchise, as the only things I've seen are the sequel trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker), the standalone prequel films (Rogue One and Solo), and the episodic show Star Wars: Visions. A part of me doesn't want to become fully invested in the franchise, because that would not only require me to remember a crap ton of names, but I fear that if I were to become a die-hard fan, I would devolve into one of those snobby fans who get pissy at others for having a different opinion. I mean, just look at MisAnthro Pony; a few years ago, he ruined his reputation with his never-ending rants The Last Jedi by seemingly attacking anyone who expressed a smidge of support for the film. Either way, I did enjoy the stuff I have seen, and with the annoucement of a new season of Star Wars: Visions coming out today, I have something to look forward to.

Now onto the artwork!

At first glance, you might be thinking, "Why celebrate Star Wars Day with an artwork that features characters with no connections to Star Wars?" Well, to answer that question, we'll have to look at the episode of The Casagrandes that first inspired this artwork: the Season 2 episode "Chancla Force". This episode premiered on June 11, 2021, and is about Carl hiding her abuela's chanclas (sandals) because of how she uses them to run the apartment with an iron fist, leading to complete chaos and disorder. While I didn't find the episode to be all that special, one thing I took note of in the episode was the amount of nods to the Star Wars franchise: the title card is a mock-up of the poster for the original 1977 film, the ending of the episode has Rosa dress and behave similarly to Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the chanclas Rosa uses in the episode seem to be combination of lightsabers (because of how they're used as a weapon) and the Force (with how it's used to control others). Okay, so that was the basis of the image, so where does Camila Noceda come in? For that, we just need to jump a couple months later to August 14, 2021, where The Owl House released their Season 2 episode "Yesterday's Lie". In that episode, Camila noticed that what she thought was her daughter was actually a shapeshifting creature from the Boiling Isles named Vee, and Camila loved her regardless of the facade. Anyways, at the climax of the episode, Vee is captured by a conspiracy theorist, so Camila went and saved her, and she attacked the theorist with a chancla she had in her purse.

Because of these two Latin-American women using a chancla as a weapon, that inspired me to create this Star Wars-inspired crossover. Believe it or not, the idea for this artwork was actually conceived last year; the reason I never got to it was because I struggled to figure out how the overall image would look. However, the idea never left my mind, and I decided that this would be the year I made it, as I was more confident in my drawing skills, and not too long ago, The Owl House just aired its final episode. Speaking of the finale, I thought it was a brilliant way to conclude a show that was axed off by executives who said it "didn't fit the Disney brand". I think my favorite thing about the finale was that it didn't conclude the same way Amphibia did, where the main character loses contact with the other world permanently. Instead, the characters have complete access to the Boiling Isles whenever, meaning that they don't have to worry about losing contact with the friends they made in their adventures (I mean, how devastating would it be if Luz couldn't see Amity, the girl she's clearly in a relationship with?).

Drawing the characters was the easy part, but when it came to their chanclas and the lighting, that's a different story. At first, I wanted the chanclas to be their regular colors, but in order to really give it that sense of Star Wars and to make the artwork feel more exciting, I decided to make them glow the standard colors for lightsabers: blue and red. This is probably one of the rare times where I used lighting instead of shading. In a way, it's like trying to apply shading to object, but doing it backwards: instead of coloring in the areas that are blacked out, you color the areas that are in front of the light source. As for the light and shadows on the ground, I drew two elipses, used a gradient to color them their respective chancla color, smudged them, and then used a black pen to draw in their shadows. My goal with the background was the make sure the brightest thing in the room was their battle, which is a common motif when it comes to the lightsaber battles in the Star Wars films.
