Description My fifth entry of the ever-so-iconic "NOT YOU" collage dedicated to animation. If I had to describe all the animated media we got this year, I would say we got some pretty good highs, and some new lows.

While many may remember 2023 as the year where actors and writers went on strike for better treatment, and the ever-mounting reasons why David Zaslav is the worst CEO to ever live and why he should be fired from Warner Bros. Discovery, let's just take a moment appreciate the animated content that we were provided with this year, whether they graced the theater screen, our own TVs or computers, or whatever else we watch this stuff on.

Elemental: My favorite animated film of 2023. After directing one of Pixar's lower-tier films with The Good Dinosaur, Peter Sohn has managed to redeem himself by telling us this wonderful story of a water guy and a fire girl falling in love and defying society's expectations. Featuring some of Pixar's finest animation and a vast universe with excellent worldbuilding, this is one film I'm eager to watch again and again.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: The sequel to the universally acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, this second chapter in Miles Morales' story proved to be just as good, if not better, than the first. Thanks to the numerous animation styles, the richly developed characters, and the intense action scenes and stakes at hand, this is certainly one of the best superhero films of the decade. Here's to seeing the third and final film of the trilogy: Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie: What is, in my opinion, not just my favorite film from Illumination, but also the greatest film adapted from a video game. Under the watchful eyes of Nintendo, this film starring everyone's favorite Italian plumbers in the Mushroom Kingdom proved to be a giant love letter to Nintendo fans worldwide... unlike the trainwreck that was the 1993 live-action film starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo.

Nimona: What was meant to be Blue Sky Studios' swan song before closing their doors, this film about the partnership between a shapeshifting girl and a knight framed for murder proved to be one of the most kick-a** animated films of the year, and we have to thank Netflix and Annapurna Pictures for reviving this dead project back to life. Guess it's true what everyone's saying: Blue Sky never dies.

The Amazing Digital Circus: From Gooseworx , one of the lead composers of the Hazbin Hotel pilot, comes this animated pilot about a colorful cast of characters stuck in a virtual reality world with no way to escape. Featuring vivid animation, a gaggle of characters with loveable personalities, and a deep dive into topics like existentialism and maintaining sanity, this is one project I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing more of.

Once Upon a Studio: 2023 marks the year The Walt Disney Company turns 100 years old. With a legacy lasting a full century, it only makes sense that Disney would celebrate the occasion by creating a short starring more than 500 characters from the 62 animated films they've released so far. The result was a love letter to everyone who grew up with a bit of Disney in their lives, and a testament to the fact that, even after 100 years, Disney has never lost their sense of magic.

Hailey's On It!: One of the newest shows to premiere on the Disney Channel, this show follows the adventures of Hailey Banks, a risk-averse teenager and her quest to go outside her comfort zone and accomplish her long list of tasks that will prevent the world from ending. With lots of action, comedy and a stellar voice cast, this is certainly one of the best new shows on the channel, and while I'm still catching up on it, I'm looking forward to what's in store.

The Owl House - Watching and Dreaming: The series finale to The Owl House, regarded as the greatest Disney Channel show of the 2020s. While the episode is renowned for tying up all of its loose ends and feeling like a proper conclusion to the show, it's also remembered, rather infamously, for the fact that it was made after Disney unceremoniously axed the show for "not fitting the brand". As sad it may be, at least this show went off with a bang before it could potentially suffer from seasonal rot.

Here are my honorable mentions:
  • Wish: What was originally meant to be the true celebration of Disney's 100-year legacy, this animated film, while having some strong animation and some good songs, ultimately faltered in some odd storytelling decisions that kind of hampered the final product. However, I can't bring myself to hate it like everyone else because a considerable effort was present, and at least Once Upon a Studio felt more like a bigger love letter to the company's centennial.
  • Migration: The Super Mario Bros. Movie wasn't the only film to be released by Illumination. Their second offering came in the form of this charming little film about a family of ducks getting lost while trying to migrate to Jamaica. Despite how simplistic and straightforward the film may sound, this film is simply a ton of fun by having an epic scale of adventure, a cast of such loveable characters, and a touching moral of expanding your horizons and learn that the world is much bigger than you think. Also, the short film that came before the film, Mooned, was just excellent, as we get to see what happened to Vector (the villain from the first Despicable Me) after getting trapped on the Moon.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: Personally, my favorite piece of media involving the heroes in a half shell. What makes this film so amazing, other than the sketchbook-style animation, is that the turtles themselves give off a very teenage-like energy by having the voices, appearance and attitude of standard teenagers. Definitely a step up from the live-action TMNT films produced by Michael Bay in the 2010s.
  • The Boy and the Heron: My very first Studio Ghibli film I saw in theaters. The latest outputting from famed Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki, this film about a young boy going on a quest in a magical world with a talking heron fully embraces the magic and wonder Ghibli has been utilizing since the day they were founded. While I did love this film to bits, I think Spirited Away, which I saw in full for the first time this year, is still Miyazaki's (and Ghibli's) best film.
  • Leo: Would you believe me if I said that this film starring Adam Sandler as a lizard giving a class full of fifth-graders life advice fared more successfully than Wish? Welp, it's because it's true: it has a higher percentage rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is generally regarded by many as having much more heart and soul put into it. Hell, I'm willing to admit that I found more heart in this film than Wish.
  • Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget: After 23 long years, Ginger and her flock of chickens are back at it again in the latest Aardman offering. I knew going into this film that it would never be able to top what they pulled off in the original film, but that doesn't put a dent in the fact that I still enjoyed this film quite a bit, with its homages to 60s spy films, and seeing the return of the characters from the original 2000 film we've come to love... with a little recasting, of course.
  • Lackadaisy: People are probably going to be after my head if I didn't mention this one, so I decided to check it out just for the sake of not offending fans of it. I won't lie when I say that I was genuinely impressed this pilot, given its beautiful hand-drawn animation and being set in Prohibition-era America. Though, I still think The Amazing Digital Circus was a better pilot.
  • The Loud House - Road Trip story arc: On July 14, fans of The Loud House got to feast on seven straight episodes of the Louds going on a cross-country road trip all over America, dealing with all kinds of adventures like trying to get rid of an ancient curse, touring the White House, hiking through the Rockies, reuniting with an old camp crush, trekking Route 66, experiencing the Hollywood celebrity life, and trying to hide from family friends. While I didn't think every episode was perfect, it was certainly a nice treat while the summer season was in full swing.
  • Number Lore: The follow-up to Mike Salcedo's famous Alphabet Lore series. While 2022 was dedicated to telling the story of the alphabet stopping the exploits of F, 2023 was all about the alphabet trying to stop alien numbers from invading their land and stealing their kind. So far, only three episodes have been released, but I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store for future episodes.

As for the animation in the center, it should come as no surprise that the show that should go there is Velma. Developed by Mindy Kaling, this reimaging of Scooby-Doo where the bespectacled brains of the Mystery Gang takes center stage has garnered a reputation of being not just one of the worst things Scooby-Doo related, but it quickly found itself to be quite possibly one of the worst cartoons to premiere this year. The thing that really drove people to call this show terrible (that is NOT the racists claiming that giving everyone darker skin is a bad idea) is that it tries too hard to be edgy and mature, as they decided to make everyone a complete dick to each other, and how the writing just consists of nothing but contrivance after contrivance. I personally have not seen a single episode of this show, but I have a friend who has seen it, and I'll take her word for it that it's downright terrible. In fact, the hate for this show was so bad, we dedicated the entirety of January to riffing on it, and it eventually earned its spot as the first meme of 2023. Let this be a reminder that, just because you're edgy, it doesn't mean you'll appeal to everyone.

Welp, that wraps things up for the animations of 2023. Let's hope that 2024 will be another fantastic year for animation. I already have several films I'm eagerly anticipating like Inside Out 2 and Kung Fu Panda 4.
