Description This is part of what I get paid to do from 9-5. Aside from product design and illustration for packaging, now and then I get to do advertisments for publication in trade magazines, and they're usually a lot of fun. This one's a Father's Day themed ad for a product called the 'Shock Ball'. I probably don't need to explain what it does, but just in case: think "Hot Potato" for the 21st century.

Sketched in Photoshop, inked in Illustrator, coloured (very quick-n-cheap) in Photoshop, text in Illustrator.

whoa. Is that a real toy? If it's here in the US, there would be SO many lawsuits.

I wonder where I can get one of those?

Yes, it's a real toy and you can buy it on-line.

It's not the kind of game I'd like to play. Basically, the ball is harmless, but now and then it lights up and gives an electric shock to the person who is holding it! So you can play games like 'hot potato' with it, where people quickly toss the ball to each other, trying not to be the one who gets an electric shock!

so this thing is real? hmm now i'm thinking i should get one to mess with my friends, but great art, i think i like the expressions the most, the thumbs positioning(or angle?) on the ball looks a little funny but i doubt I could figure how to improve it.

Ah! There's a game like this at the local video games spot. You're supposed to grab these two handles and it'll start to electrocute you on an increasing rate. Most people end up letting go but my buddy Hauke held on and screamed till it finished. It was kind of disturbing. @_@ Anyway.

Yay, superhero! I like the balance of color in this one. Makes the red ball stand out better with the other two primary colors behind it. Ayup.

...Now there's a toy I wouldn't have the nerve to play with. XD

And I was gonna comment on his, er, 'underwear', too. *L* Super indeed.

I get the feeling your company sells some very interesting things. XD

Great work encorporating, and professionally photomerging your illustration with the physical photo. Great stuff

Is your dad a bad enough dude to catch the ball? Love how the art looks animated without movement

ok this one I like. The product is really interesting, as I've never seen anything like it but the pose/coloring/overall way the characters fit with the product are very well drawn

I'm not surprised; HOW many times have you electrocuted yourself now?

bingodingo In reply to animator [2006-03-26 01:58:34 +0000 UTC]

Uhm, un-willingly, three times o.o All with 240V-50Hz mains, too.. and a few other times with a lot smaller voltages, like 24V and 50V ...
As for willingly? You have to be kidding.. I'm one of those people that shy away from the electric fence, cos I know what it can do o_O;;
