Description
Sam Vimes and Discworld both (c) Terry Pratchett, who I met the other day at a book signing. I drew this to give him. The writing is my attempt at being neat... honestly, when I TRY to write neatly it comes out looking like a seven year old did it! ;P But I like this pic. Terry Pratchett laughed out loud when he read the punchline!I don't think Vimes' face looks quite right. I had trouble finding the balance between making him look too old or too young. And EVERYONE who looks at this and hasn't seen Paul Kirby's Discworld art comments on those weird boots!

I was going to say that Vimes wouldneverwearshoeslike that; no defense for your toes, and so little force behind them when you hafta kick a feller where the sun don't shine...
And then I read your artist's note.

My dear, this is a remarkable drawing. I love the caption, also. Vimes' expression is... commendable. I can hardly bring myself to stop looking, this is really quite beautiful!

Whoa, you got Pterry to laugh? I met him when he came to the DC Book festival in 2008 (he autographed my copy of Making Money), but it's absolutely awesome to get that kind of compliment from him.
As for the picture itself, excellent work! Really captures Vimes' character.

Nice work. I am loving Vime's expression it's just perfect. I'm currently reading Night Watch right now and I think you've captured Vimes really well. I think it's even better that you got to give this image to Terry Prachett himself and also make him laugh.

We who live among bloody nitwits salute you.
A wonderful picture, with words that are truly right for it! You really understand Vimes... in fact is that a TP quote? I don't recognise it if so.

Nope, the Desiderata is a poetic passage that was found on the wall of a (Baltimore?) church, origin unknown. I added that last line myself. Terry Pratchett has the original; I gave it to him when I met him at a book signing in 2002 - he laughed out loud. That's one of my most treasured memories. <3

Vimes-y! This is great, and I think you drew his face perfectly--there's the very put-out expression, and he looks just the right age to me. Older, but not old, if you know what I mean.

@_@ Vimesy... Gawd, he looks all sexeh and... kind of run down... -Comfortglomps Vimes.- By some extreme stroke of luck I managed to pick out the first City Watch book (Guards! Guards!) as my first Discworld novel and fell in love with Vimes the instant I read his little monologue about the city. That was just so freakin' HILARIOUS.
"And then you hated her and, and just when you thought you'd gotten her out of your, your, whatever, then she opened her great booming rotten heart to you, caught you off bal, bal, bal, thing. ANCE. Yeah. Thassit."
<3 Definite fav. Awesome work.

Hmm, I think you're mixing up Paul Kidby with Josh Kirby. Let us test this theory of mine, shall we?

Easily understandable mistake, since the last names are ridiculously similar. I prefer Paul. Josh's stuff always look like gross sticky goblins.
At any rate, that is a lovely Vimesy drawing. It is much prettiful.

heh... i like your blurb. very vimes.
hmmm, in terms of aging, the guy's like, mid-fifties right? i'd say, add some lines around his mouth and nose, maybe a few crow's feet at the eyes, and he'll look pretty much age apropriate.

I've always had trouble trying to visualise Vimes, to me he's short to medium and I always imagine him on the thin, wiry side. Like an old cat maybe. He needs a worn and haggard, even cruel faces, but defined but blunt features and looking worn, everything about him needs to be worn...
I can see your problem, but I think you did a fantastic job here, the expression is perfect though he might be a little on the young side, but hey, no one says which version of the character it has to be.

I really like this piece. As an avid discworld fan that pic does have a very Vimesy quality. I kinda picture it as a younger Vimes as in later books he strikes me as being a little less wiry. But you have created a wonderful image of the character. Of course everyone pictures characters slightly different in their minds eye.

I havent seen the other art with the different boots, but I can imagine him wearing something like that... as long as they have cardboard soles

In the books he's described as skinny and wiry, like a terrier. You've probably seen one of the rather innacurate cover illustrations by Paul Kidby (?), or one of the comic adaptions. I based this off my mental image of him as described by Terry Pratchett, after reading every one of the City Watch books repeatedly. They're my favourite Discworld subseries. ^__^
