Description Donald Duck (c) Disney.

I've classified this as fan-art, but I'm really not sure -how- to classify it. I was working at Disney when I drew this. We'd just come off "The Lion King 1.5" and were about to start "The Three Musketeers", which was a Mickey, Donald and Goofy version of the tale. I was on the Donald Team - we had to handle both ducks (Daisy and Donald) and Goofy, as well as a bit of Clarabelle. I have to admit, the fact that I like drawing ducks was the main factor in my choosing that team. Donald is far more interesting a personality than Mickey, too.

Anyway, before we start inbetweening on a new project, we're told to spend a day studying the model sheets and then sketching the characters we'll be working on. This is one of the Donald drawings I did that survived.

I should probably mention here that the sketches I'm uploading today are all from mid-2003, during my 'Disney Period'. I found a lot of old pics when I moved.

cool..I didn't know you worked at Disney Australia...that is awesome..I wish they would bring back Disney here in America with their traditional stuff..now all they do is make 3d animations. I really wish I could have worked there before it fell apart, but I am just a college student trying to get through my bachelors in Animation

I might join one of my friend's when he makes his own animation studio..I do love doing animation. Just wish there was more traditional studios around. it is really hard to find work.

I do love Donald Duck...but I am really bad at drawing him...I might use these drawings you put up for reference to a manga I am doing on Kingdom Hearts..where Donald is one of the characters.

Woa, that's great, did you really worked in Disney? That's why you're so good with cartoons... Where do you work right now? These sketches are really good. It shows how talented you are!

Yeah, I worked for Walt Disney Animation Australia. At the moment, I work nowhere - I was working as a graphic designer last year on the Sunshine Coast. I'm in Brisbane now (a city an hour away) and as it's Christmas, I'm currently not having much luck finding work.

I always seen a Disney style in your drawings. This just like Donald as I know him. You worked at disney?? I loved Lion King 1.5 much laughter. Is the a scene or two you have draw?? Fun to work in Disney or just alot of hard work? Sorry, many questions but I have never met sombody that have wqorked in Disney before.

Questions are fine - actually, comments containing questions are usually the only ones I answer. Yep, I worked at Walt Disney Animation Australia for a year, in 2003, as an Inbetweener. I worked on two films: "The Lion King 1.5" (on the Timon team) and "The Three Musketeers" (on the Donald team). It was fun work and the people were great, but the -hours- were insane and the overtime was all unpaid. Sometimes it felt as though we were constantly on 'crunch time', almost mortgaging our lives to this job. Well, I can't speak for everyone else, but that's how it felt to me. It got depressing, and in the end, I left. That was one of the most difficult decisions I've ever made. I don't regret it, though.

this sounds pretty weird to me, i admit... i just looked it up in google and the three musketeers came out in 1993 (!), you you couldn't possibly have worked on that one, i mean, you were 13...
and as far as i know, disney strictly prohibits to take any drawing out of their studios at all and keep them for themselves, so if you really worked for disney and uploaded an image of them, you might be in real trouble รดO

can't say anything about lion king 1.5, although i still think you're pretty young to have worked on disney already... ^^" but well, suppose that's possible

nice drawing anyway, he does look exactly like donald should look like ^^

i know this lady in real life. she is indeed Tania Walker who used to work at Disney studios here in Australia. I have linked you to the two movies she did inbetweening for as well as her own page on imdb.

As for the Donald drawing, it's NOT a production drawing; it's a drawing I did in my own time, for practice - which means I've as much right to upload it here as anyone who draws fanart.

As for the rest: The Three Musketeers (the Mickey, Donald and Goofy animated version) is a different film to the version of The Three Musketeers you have misguidedly looked up. The version I worked on came out in 2004; I worked on it in 2003. There have been numerous film adaptions of The Three Musketeers, but I'm sure you know that.

My name is Tania Walker. You are very welcome to check the credits of TLK 1.5 and 3 Musketeers; my name is in both, under 'Inbetweeners' (Timon team for the former film, and Donald/Goofy team for the latter).

I was 22 years old in the year I worked at Disney. There were others there younger than me.

That's very good.
Donald acted really out of character in "The Three Musketeers". Didn't throw a temper tantrum or anything.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

animator In reply to Doodley [2004-12-29 22:47:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I thought that was a shame too - Donald throwing a tizzy would have been fun to work on. I remember they were considering cutting one of my favourite gags in the film, too. I haven't seen the finished film yet, so maybe you can tell me if it made it in: when Donald has to tell Mickey that Goofy has been kidnapped, he races up and starts gabbling on in Donaldspeak. Mickey looks bewildered and says, "Donald... I have no idea what you just said." Donald grabs a pad and pencil and scribbles down a message for Mickey, and thrusts it at him. The notepad reads: "WAK WAK WAK WAK".

The timing in that gag was excellent, it always cracked me up. Did it make it into the final film?

Doodley In reply to animator [2005-01-09 14:29:49 +0000 UTC]

Sorry it took me so long to answer, I recently watched that scene again to make sure...

Anyhoo, the part where Donald scribbles down the message wasn't in the finished film.

I looked at the credits, and Toon City and DisneyToon Studios were the only animation studios listed. How come Disney studios in Australia wasn't listed?

When I was working there, shortly before I left, the management in the USA changed the name of our studio from "Walt Disney Animation Australia" to "Disneytoon Studios". I can't get outta the habit of calling it the former. We were all kind of annoyed at the name-change; "Disneytoon Studios" sounds like a playgroup or something. 9_9

Doodley In reply to animator [2005-01-10 08:25:06 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is quicker to type, plus I like the logo.
You left? Why? DisneyToon Studios is one of Disney's best studios! The animation makes their movies more fun to watch!
It's better than the Japanese one, that for sure.

animator In reply to Doodley [2005-01-11 07:13:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the animation was great and the people were great, but the hours were ridiculous - during crunchtime I'd work anywhere between 50 and 70 hours per week, and the overtime was unpaid. T_T It got really exhausting. Eventually I decided my health and sanity was more important than the job. Toughest decision of my life.

As much as I don't like Donald, I'll admit he was one of the best Disney characters. Mickey was so...bleh and Goofy was...not for everyone. Donald was the only one that had any real personality. Very awesome that you got to work on something like that. You did a great job

I can see the confusion. Although the fanart classification fits only because it isn't yours tacked on with being a known mainstream character. Even though you worked for the company that owns the character. Lucky you. I'm still trapped in school with dreams of making it in the industry although I ALWAYS end up sighing and not wanting to look at my portfolio. LoL

It's a neat little sketch. Donald does have more personality. Mickey was always the average every day guy.
