Description
I've always wanted to draw a portrait of a man with a cigaretteIt's a portrait of Conrad Veidt. I loved him in "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "The Man Who Laughs". --> I highly recommend these films, watch them if you can
But then Mr. Veidt turned out to be a combination of a smoking Zombie and the Joker from Batman I think
Black marker and pastels on paper

I love this! Regarding the hand don't worry about it, it is always hard to draw and paint plus in this composition it is really ok as it blends well with the man. You should explore more his style it is very interesting

I used pastels (the hard ones, not oil pastels) for the colors. Thanks for your nice comment .

You have just reminded me to watch the 'Man who laughs' movie - haven't seen it in a while.
Wonderful painting, it reminds me of myself (expression) in the last few days..

The swirly lines look like they where fun to draw. Hands usually look funny, even when they're realistic.

Yes, they were fun . I had a pencil sketch but the black marker had its own will and the lines and swirls came out different
.

some physicist say every particle in the universe has has its own will, so
from that axiom a marker having a mind of its own only makes sense. Artists sometimes seem to just nudge them in a another direction just a little bit.

Art can have some strange behavior sometimes. Like my piece 'Beneath Olympus': while painting that, one of my brush strokes didn't even touch the canvas, but the painting flew across the room.

Awesome! I love classics. This piece is just superb and I know several people who would fall in love with it! May I post this link on FB? My brother is a huge movie buff and he would adore this. He knows the running time and specs on almost every film there is lol! ( His hand looks just fine btw) Wonderful job as usual, my dear!!!!

Wow, thank you so much . You can post a link on Facebook of course, but please don't put the photo on your FB-account
. Do you think they will recognize him as Conrad Veidt? I was a little bit disappointed because I think he doesn't look like him. My boyfriend even said he looks like Schiele

hahaha, well it looks like him to me a lot now I know it is Veidt but it is not meant as realism so it is a rather loose interpretation but that's great. That is what is beautiful about it. This gives it a special quality in that people who don't know and cannot appreciate the work as a particular person will like it for itself and maybe relate it to someone else they really like. Fans of Veidt should recognize him immediately. It really is beautifully done. I'm thinking of doing some works with my new markers inspired by your work if that is okay. I would never copy but I would like to attempt something like your style. Every time I see your art I want to do that too! haha So be flattered and not pissed, okay? te-he

Oh, I would never be pissed if my work can inspire other artists! I feel honored, really

I think they will recognize him. Thank you for understanding too. I really would love to learn and incorporate similar style as yours. I could never achieve your's exactly because it is so "you" but I could really learn to give my work a little more of that something special you have. XD I'm such a big fan of your work! I probably won't be able to come near matching it, haha, but maybe I will learn something new anyway.

Thank you. I did one but it is nothing like yours. Just a bit more stylized than my usual stuff. I want to get good at design and bold black and white to make color pages. I used to do so much realism from photos and stuff and just got tired of it I guess. I'm pretty good at it but I just want my imagination to come back like when I was a child and still have the skill of an adult, haha!
