I tried Apo and gave up, it is indeed a difficult programme. I love what you do with it

But you do UF and I've heard that one's even more difficult than Apo! I love what you do too! UF is very different in its results than Apo and I very much admire those of you who use it!

I guess it's a question of which programme agrees with you most. I found Apo extremely difficult to handle. And I also appreciate the possibility of rendering large, print-grade images with UF more easily than with Apo. Thanks for your kind words

You're very welcome. I tried UF years ago when there was a free edition and found it totally confusing! *smiles* You're so right about what suits you... or maybe it's what you learn first and so that seems the easiest.

Wow, it took you that long? How long does it normally take for you to create one of your pieces? Is it hard to do?

anjaleck In reply to AfflictedHeart [2007-01-16 02:27:48 +0000 UTC]
Hi, Jennifer,
Well, a normal render is somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the complexity and size of the render. Normally, no, it doesn't take that long. But when you zoom in tighter, it takes longer because of the degree of detail.
Fractals aren't hard... it just takes a lot of patience and a lot of "fiddling" around. I played with Apo for months before I got a dA account... I literally rendered hundreds of fractals before I got to the stage where I felt they were good enough to be shown to others.

Anj

Ah, that's interesting. I've not really messed with computer programs for art so I wouldn't really know. I've always wanted to try doing something with Photoshop or something similar, but money is a big hindering factor. I've been drawing since I was nine, but my best efforts include mechanical pencils, ball point pens and Crayola colored pencils, haha. Maybe oneday I'll actually be a better artist.
Hugs,
Jen ^_^

Also, there is a freeware program called "Gimp" that is available for both Windows and Macs. It's in the same format as Photoshop, so if you've ever used it before it should be a breeze. I believe it can be found simply at its gimp.org page. Have fun playing!

I can tell you of a program that is a lot cheaper than PS and *I* think it's easier to use. Although now that Corelle bought it I'm not sure the direction it's taken. That's Paint Shop Pro. I have both Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro and much prefer PSP. However, David uses PS for his work, and tells me that once you learn the program you can do a lot more with it.
You're talented, don't fool yourself. I guess my advice to you (if you want any - please let me know if I step out of line here) would be to take some classes. You might have already done this.
I took art all the way through 10th grade. My mom would have pushed me to take more, but I never felt spontaneous enough to be a traditional artist. I'm too logical. That's why I do well with Apo. David, who is more artistically inclined than I am, doesn't understand fractals and has no desire to mess with them.
My profession is engineering. I design aluminum and glass curtain walls for a manufacturer - shop drawings. I love it. So, there's a fit for my creative yet logical mind. *smiles*

I will definitely keep that in mind whenever I have the funds to indulge in that sort of thing. I actually just started taking real art classes last semester, my first, of college. It was a fun and definitely worth while experience. I learned a lot. Unfortunately, the community college I'm attending didn't have the art classes I needed to take this semester to further my learning experience and I couldn't take others because of prerequisites I still need. So I'm focusing on my other love; writing.
And don't worry about ever imparting advice. I could never be offended by anything anyone said since I look at everything as constructive criticism. I just might not always follow the advice, haha.
Right now I'm just focusing on going to school and surviving. I'm hoping to eventually have some sort of career involving art or writing or if luck would have it, both.
Thanks again for all the advice!

Glad to hear you're pursuing the art classes. You've definitely got talent. I also know how money can really restrict things. We are going through our own hard times right now due to my daughter's death. Hopefully it will get better in time.
I always offer constructive criticism, when I offer any kind of criticism at all - mainly because I think there are enough destructive people out there... and I'm not one of them.
My mother and father both taught me that if I can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. There's no need to be rude and crude especially about something that is important to someone else. I guess I was raised by the "golden rule" and I try to live by it at all times. I do NOT understand people who want or need to tear other people down. I've always believed in encouraging others - and one of those others is you.
Hugs,
Anj

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. That must be hard... I couldn't even begin to comprehend.
My parents and grandparents always taught me to say nice things too. I've always been pretty quiet though, at least when confronted face-to-face with someone. For some reason, whenever I try to voice things, the words just don't come out right and I usually end up inadvertantly insulting the person instead.
Haha, I remember I had asked my art teacher if he was an "old-fashioned" artist. He just sort of quirked an eyebrow and was like, "What?" I meant to say "traditional", but the word had slipped my mind at that moment. He was a bit of an intimidating person as it was, haha. I think he thought I was a bit odd. Ah well.

Ahh.. the teacher. I can imagine what was going through his mind... I've done exactly what you've done many times, yet I've been on the receiving end too. He probably knew what you meant and was getting and inner sense of humor from it. If he thought you were odd, so what? Revel in your oddity or your differences for they are what make you who you are.
I tried for so many years to "fit in" and never could seem to. Then one day (this comes with age) I realized trying to fit in didn't work so I was going to be myself. I'm different than most people and spent my life wondering why that was and being unhappy about it. But you want to know something? When I embraced those differences and quit trying to be like others, I became much more comfortable with myself and found more acceptance from others. Maybe that acceptance what always there before but I was too wrapped up in my differences to see it. Who knows?
Okay... with that bit of amateur philosophy/psychology I will leave it at that!
Hugs and love,
Anj

Haha, I bet he did get a kick out of it. He used to get a little frustrated with me because I would always finish drawing before everyone else in the class so he'd always have to try to find a way to keep me occupied. I noticed he started to be more critical with my artwork too, but I kind of liked the criticism. It helped me get better with charcoal, which I had never used before until that class.
As for accepting oneself? That's so hard!!! >.< Haha, I try to, but sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't be different. Most of the people who know me are usually a little put out by me because I'm always quiet and hardly jump into conversation. I'm always scared of sounding ignorant or something. Then again, I usually can make everyone laugh with my goofyness. Before a couple years ago, I pretty much stuck to myself so I find dealing with people a bit difficult and very intimidating. I think I get better with it though as time passes.

Haha, maybe. I had two art classes last semester and they both were put out by how fast I would get done. My Design teacher joked that I would get all my work done before midterms and then just stop showing up. It sort of ended up being a problem. It's hard to slow myself down and take my time because there's so much I want to get out before I forget, so I rush and then it doesn't look as good as it could. Haha, sometimes I end up with a completely different image from the one I'd originally thought to draw.

Your art sounds like my poetry... sometimes the poem takes it's own direction no matter what I try to do with it. But then again, I haven't been able to write lately. I'll be glad when the block breaks and I can find some release there.
With your art - have you thought of this? That you might want to hurry through and get your first impressions down and then sit back and take your time redoing it? I'm not a traditional artist, but I understand a lot of them work that way.

Anj

Ah, writer's block. That sucks! I've had that for a long time now.
As for me art? No, actually. I never thought of doing that. I usually don't even look at my old work until months later. Sometimes I'll get something really nice down and then I'll go over it in ink and erase the pencil. That way, if I draw anything else, I don't lose the original drawing and can add to it.

Welll... it's something you might want to thing about.... doing a quick sketch or colored layout, put it aside for a while and come back to it later to finish it. A lot of the masters did that and I know the Impressionists did it because their sketches are still around.
