I use very soft pencils - 6B, 7B, 8B. There are a lot of layers)) These are Faber-Castell pencils, but I've also used Koh-I-Noor to make dark background here: annashell.deviantart.com/art/F... , it was 7B pencil

Your pencil technique is very good. It resulted in a piece which is very unnerving to look at, though much of that was already present in the photo you used as a reference.
