Awesome idea.  Depressing but awesome. In a way it is universal, you can replace that with cars, electronics, wasted food, etc, etc...

In truth I just laugh at many so called experts. They prove time and time again that they have no clue about real chemistry or materials.

Any not contaminated (like radioactive/organic contaminated) plastic can be transformed into different plastic. Problem is, nobody cares about real global recycling. All everybody is interested is easy money, so that's why main target of recycling are easiest materials like PET or HDPE. Given time and a lot of money/effort you can recycle plastics in basically closed loop. Unfortunately it is cheaper to dump really stubborn and difficult to break polymers into oceans or jungle and manufacture more and more garbage than actually recycling it on planetary scale. On the other hand single-use foil bags are more eco-friendly than paper (even considering progress on that matter like removing vast quantities of chlorine required to break the pulp) to recycle. Simple chemistry. HDPE is super trivial to recycle, you just have to collect it, wash, warm-up to melt, cool, cut, collect granulate - that's it. Recycle ratio is 100%, try that with paper.

Biggest problem with everything is uncontrollable population growth. More people, more garbage, more food, more strip mining, etc... Planet ecosystem is connected vessels system. You add 500 million of people, you have to add 500 million of things in every other 'departament'. We killing ourselves each day and plastic is just small fraction of mankind problems. Seems like World Wars are best tool for population control.  Did you know that Genghis-Khan murdered so many people that CO2 emission went down by 7-8% on a planetary scale?

Thank you (but I'm a bit skeptical about the Genghis Khan anecdote)

Eye-of-Tichodroma [2019-05-13 09:46:09 +0000 UTC]

I love this. It's symbolic and reminds us of how humanity's mistakes come back to haunt us but at the same time the creature is also beautiful, like a woman in an elaborate ball gown. I see this as a kind of apocalyptic inversion of the "Mother Nature as a woman adorned with flowers" motif, yet the creature is still an agent of nature's vengeance. As if the tarnished beauty of the earth comes back in the refuse that will suffocate those who destroyed it in the first place.
